My son had 1400/1600 SATs with 720, 710, 680 Sat IIs and was waitlisted for business school and ultimately did not get in. He was well rounded, varsity athlete (team even won States) and had a lot of ECs. I believe the SFS is even tougher to get into.

Forgot to mention he was in the top 10% of graduating class, member of National Honor Society, AP scholar with Honor.

^ I’m scare now for my D!!

Compared against your son’s scores, there is no “fighting chance”

I think it depends on what they are looking for. Additionally, I live in the tri-state area so there are a lot of students just like my son. If you are somewhere in the nation that does not have many students applying to these top schools, then you may have a better chance.

I think D’s URM status is being overlooked. She has great grades and ECs. Scores are a little low but I think she has a great chance.

Thanks ArmoMom and C’BadDad, we are from nowhere, South Carolina, hopefully this will better her chances

I remember reading a thread on CC called Want to Know Your Chances under the Gtown college link. It has a lot of posters. The author of the thread works in the admissions office at Gtown and has the break down of statistics. Although he has not added to it for a while, I would recommend scrolling through the entries to see if any of the applicants match your daughter’s stats. Good luck.

I have been reading where Nat’l Honor Society is such a dubious distinction these days because all schools have varying criteria and some are very much a club of sorts – clique. At some schools, it’s great grades and volunteering which makes it hard to achieve if you are a three sport athlete who actually works in the summer for a paycheck.

Yes, this is true. The National Honor Society’s criteria is 3.0 GPA. Individual schools have the right to alter their own requirements as long as they meet the minimum. For example, in the school that my children attend, it is 3.6 or above GPA with at least 20 hours of community service each year along with excellent reviews from each teacher. The reviews truly matter because the year my son was inducted, someone from his class had the volunteer hours and the GPA but was not really liked by a few of his teachers, he did not make it in.

Her ethnic status will definitely be a boost. She needs to raise her SATs though. maybe pull that 1860 to a 2000 but then again Gtown doesnt consider the writing section so she’ll have to pull her V+M=1240 to a 1350 or something. Good luck.

I’m an applicant to SFS from SC too… let’s hope both your daughter and I get accepted! hahah

… I’m not getting in then. T_T Why are colleges so cruel. sighs

My D was deferred early Acceptance with theses scores

33ACT
2100 SAT
3.97 UW 4.66 W (honors & AP)
AP Scholar w/distinction
has taken 6 AP thru Jr yr and 4 more this year.
Lots of EC’s and good rec’

We are hoping for RD to be accepted, but hold out not much hope.

my hopes are disminishing a little more every days!! my D applied to a lot of great schools (Georgetown,Duke,Brown,JHU,Tufts…) and also to American u and Oxford at Emory but like safeties! and so far she is receiving only news(emails, letters, calls,.) from Oxford and American … does this mean that she’ll only get into her safeties??? this is scary!! she worked very hard during hs, being President of a lot of clubs and class P too and Battalion Commander of 100 cadets and also she speaks 3 languages fluently(she is french) and took 8AP, dual enrollment classes, internship in Spain with sholarship, Questbridge finalist,Elks semi-finalist…etc…all that to end-up at her safeties??? she is going to be so sad!! how am i going to make her feel better?.. i know her stats are medium :2000(sat) 31(act) 3.8(gpa) but she is so willing all the time to do good and to be involved and to reach higher that it will be very sad to see her goes into a so-so college! but when i read others people stats on CC, i am very worried for my D… like you Sbownell, how come your D was deferred?? it doesn’t make sense to me! and it makes me feel very uncertain right now…

It all works out in the end. My son was crushed when he did not get into Georgetown (waitlisted - never got off that list). He decided to go the Boston College and loves it there. I understand how you feel but after having gone through it with my son, I can tell you from experience that they end up loving where they go and if they don’t, they can always transfer.

S graduated from SFS in 2007. He had a 1590/1600 SAT score and was a National Merit Finalist and was deferred from early admission but later admitted during regular admissions. The one thing I am noticing that your daughter seems to be lacking is ECs that show an interest in SFS - meaning - Model UN, Model Congress, or activities like that. URM is a definite plus though. Good luck. SFS/Georgetown is an incredible place to study.

ArmoMom - YD is graduating from BC this spring. She has LOVED her four years there.

this has to be the most funny thread in GTown forums. Parents, not kids, discussing their anxiety.

My D was really bummed when she got deferred, but I really do believe that she is going to end up where she is meant to be, whether that’s GT or not, She too got into Boston College, and it is a nice fit for her, so don’t worry. No matter what there is a good fit and home for your D. I didn’t post my D’s stats to make you feel bad, and you just never know what they are looking for from certain areas and schools. Keep the faith and don’t get worried, it will work out

It is so difficult to determine what the colleges are looking for-in their ideal student. It will only hurt if an applicant does not apply-applying at least gives the student a fair opportunity. We must keep the faith, our kids will fall within one of the requirements, rather it be EC, SAT scores, leadership or just faith. I wish you all the best who have applied to Georgetown and no matter what your child and my D will be accepted to some college, USA and hopefully they will make the best of it.

For LaVieEnChocola; your D appled to quite a few great colleges, she will definitely (with those scores and EC) get accepted into a few of them, if not ALL of them. KEEP the faith.
