Does my son need a laptop in college?

I am wondering if my son will need to bring a laptop to The University of Texas. He wants a desktop because he will be living in his own house but he doesn’t know if he needs to bring a laptop to the university.

I would say it’s better to have a laptop. My daughter is a UT student and she is always carrying hers around campus with her.

I used a desktop I already had in my dorm room for freshman year, but I also wanted something to take notes on in class and just to carry around campus, so I bought a Samsung Chromebook. It’s not exactly a great computer because it only runs Chrome OS and you can’t download software, but it’s EXTREMELY lightweight, great to carry around, mine has lasted almost 2 years and still works great, and the best part is that they cost $250 (they could be even cheaper at this point). A Chromebook isn’t enough on its own for college, but if you already have a desktop its exactly what you need to have something portable to carry around campus.

im a first year college student this year , and its my second semester , and in my opinion the most valuable thing i have with me is my laptop , although a desktop would do the job , a good part of the social aspect of college for me is studying with friends and i can’t really do with a desktop since i can’t drag it along everywhere , also the convenience of forgetting something in your dorm but having a pdf or online copy of it saves so much time. So in my option its worth it to get a laptop , but if you can’t afford it then its a different story and a desktop should do the job

On the first day of class freshman year I arrived with a notebook for each of my classes in my backpack. 45 minutes and 1 sore wrist later, I realized what a horrible, horrible mistake I had made.

I’ve seen emails to my son to bring laptop to class but he is ECE engineering

Absolutely yes. In fact a lot of the homework, paper submission, etc. is all done online.

Get a laptop with a docking station. You can plug in a large monitor and keyboard, then take the laptop with you when needed.

The olden days of pencil and paper are over. Get him a laptop unless you want your son to sprain his wrist trying to keep up with the lecture.
