If I say that I do not intend to live on campus, will that negatively effect my chances of acceptance to a school or do they not really care?

Many schools have requirements for Freshman year on campus living. You need to check each school’s policy.

The school I am talking about says if you live within 30 miles you are exempt from said policy. I live 23 miles away, so I find it ridiculous to pay $10,000 per year when I can just drive there so easily.

Mapping web sites indicate that the closest route between Hunterdon, NJ to Lehigh University is 29 miles and would take 57 minutes, so that would barely fit into the exemption.

Whether Lehigh cares whether you are a commuter or residential student may not necessarily be the same as some other university’s policy. It may depend on whether they care how many commuter versus residential students they have.

Thank you! When I mapped it using google maps it came up as 23 miles. I live right on the border of NJ and PA.

I guess I will just have to take the risk is each college has a differing policy.

A two hour round trip commute is going to cost you a significant amount in time, wear on your car and gasoline.

Thanks for the advice, siliconvalleymom. I remember it only taking about 35 minutes each way, but nevertheless I see your point.

Do the schools’ apps ask that?

I thought that only gets asked for financial aid?

If it’s not asked on the app, then the adcoms won’t even know.

If you’re that worried, then indicate that you’ll live on campus, then when you get your aid pkg, if living on campus is too expensive, then get the waiver since you live within the 30 mile range.

I believe it is just a yes or no question on the common app, but thank you! That’s fantastic advice! That’s what I’ll do.
