Does not playing a sport/not being a HUGE sports fan impair your college social life

I'm just curious, as I'm just not a GIGANTIC sports person (although I do enjoy watching baseball, the olympics, etc.)

That's basically the way it is in high school; if you play a sport, you belong to a huge network of friends that people who don't play a sport are not included in. don't get me wrong, I've found my "group" in high school and fit comfortably in my circle of friends, but I've always gotten the feeling that if I played a sport or took a huge interest in football or basketball, I would have had many more friends.

I know it varies from school to school, but are people who have no interest in sports or play them at a disadvantage socially?

not really unless you go to like a sports dominant school like DUKE where basketball is god

Not at all.

I go to the University of Florida, which is a HUGE sports school, and not really giving a **** about sports hasn’t had an impact on my social life at all. And, haha, you might change. I never cared at all about football before I came here, and even though I still wouldn’t say I care, I enjoy sitting down with some friends at a football party, getting drunk and watching the game.

I go to UNC (which is a much better sports school than Duke, I must add :P) , and am a huge sports fan. While you don’t have to be an uber-sports fan to go to a school like UNC (or any other big sports schools out here), I feel like I would have had much less fun if I wasn’t interested in sports while at school. Football and basketball games are much more fun if you actually know who is playing and what is going on, and if you genuinely care about the outcome of the game. Yeah, you can go to the parties and games and etc and not have a clue, but what fun is that?

depends on where you go.

I only occasionally watch basketball and I’m not too worried

I could see it affecting you at big time sports schools like Notre Dame, Duke etc. but overall it shouldn’t cause you any problems.

I go to UNC, too, and I was never super into sports before I got here…but a place like this will transform you into a die-hard fan in NO TIME…

Now I bleed Carolina blue.

You shouldn’t be; Emory’s teams are terrible.

if you go to a big-time sports school, like i did (penn state)…then it might make you miserable. and then you can transfer, like me.

that might not happen, though. to be fair, psu was the only school i’d applied to because i wasn’t even certain i wanted to go to college at that point. i quickly realized it wasn’t the place for me, and not just because of the football-is-life attitude. just try to get involved in other activities on campus that interest you, and you’ll have no shortage of friends if you feel the school is a good match in every other way.
