I notice they have a lot of NMSF winners attending. Is this a meaningful plus in admissions?

It's a plus anywhere. It helps that they're a sponsor school though. I <3 my $2,000/year.

Does NU give money for becoming a NM Semifinalist or Finalist? I just found out I got Semifinalist, and I'm hoping I'll get Finalist. So, I was just wondering how much money (if any) they give for that. Thanks.

Finalist only, but something like 90% of Seminfinalists make it to finalist, so you're pretty much set. And NU gives the aforementioned amount to all scholars, I believe. The NMS website has more information.

^ Same here.

Same with my daughter.

Also, the fact that the National Merit Scholarship Corporation is located a few blocks from the Evanston campus probably means that Northwestern will continue sponsoring National Merit Scholarships for the foreseeable future.

hktk ~ Ha! I had not put that together but you're probably right.

While money is always good, I was wondering if there is a noticeable preference in admissions?

I think that any school that offers National Merit Scholarships is doing so because they want to draw them to that school. So, yes, I think it does make a difference in admissions at Northwestern. It was third (behind Harvard and Texas) in total number of Finalists in 2007 - 249 out of a class of less than 2000.
