Does Penn waitlist deferred ED applicants?

Hello everyone,
I was deferred early decision this year, and was wondering if Penn waitlists kids RD that were deferred ED. Someone told me that they do not, and I just wanted someone to confirm/refute it for me. Can you please provide a source as well? Thanks!!!

People in many threads reported that PENN promised not to wait-list deferrals.

OP: to be frank, I’ve never heard of that. But logic tells me there’s no reason for Penn to not offer WL spots to those whom they want to target regardless if they’re an ED Deferree or an RD applicant. When Penn offers WL, it’s simply an offer. Recipients are 100% free to decline. WLs are used because Penn honestly doesn’t know if they need to backfill unused spots (some say WL is used to soften a hard rejection for some kids, i.e. legacy kids whose parents might get ticked off). Don’t worry about that.

If you indeed, don’t get accepted or rejected at the end of March and Penn, instead, offers you a WL spot – then you evaluate at that point – your circumstances will be completely different than now, December. Then, you’ll have multiple accepts in hand. This isn’t anything to expend emotional energy on, whatsoever.

Thanks everyone! I am not expending emotional energy on this, I just want to know what to expect in March

My interviewer I believe said he was deferred then waitlisted but I’m not totally sure I understood correctly. He had applied to M&T ED, was I waitlisted for SEAS RD, then got in off waitlist and applied for M&T end of freshman year and got in. That part I’m all sure about. The only thing I was left unsure about is if he was deferred for SEAS then waitlisted or had checked only RD for his back up. Then that meant he was rejected ED for M&T and waitlisted RD for SEAS. I guess this doesn’t help that much in actuality. Sorry.

Penn and Yale have a policy to not waitlist deferred students. Harvard and Duke do waitlist previously deferred students. Don’t know about other schools. But if you want to know for sure, have guidance call to find out .
