Is it better to take lots of practice tests or just reading prep books? I've never really been motivated to do practice tests for the SAT I, but prefer just reading review books. Should I get my act together this summer and start practicing more?

i am a huge proponent of lots of PRACTICE for SATs. i only work through the review section of prep books a little--its the practice tests that really help me. before i bought Princeton Review's 11 New SATs book, i got a 590 in critical reading. after taking a few practice tests, it just clicked, i started doing better, now i got a 720 in CR. so yeah, i think practice helps a lot.

So I should actually START using my College Board book and do the tests? lol

yes, for sure. like i said, youre much better off doin the practice tests than reading the review sections. that stuff is so boring anyway, tests are exciting lol.

Um... I haven't looked at too many prep books, but it seems to me that their suggestions tend to be vapid and downright idiotic. As a result, if you're aiming for a high score, I wouldn't advise just reading them. It's critical to actually take the tests.

Also try to locate as many tests created by the College Board as possible. As might be expected, the College Board practice tests are the only ones that really resemble the real test. This is especially important for reading comprehension questions, where the test prep companies often write questions with truly awful answer choices.

lol... Forgive me, but I'm basking in my newfound credibility, since I just received my 2400 score on the SAT.

I'm in the same boat with randomperson, just got my 2400. Here's how I improved my score 230 points in two weeks:

Took 4 Practice Tests from the Official CollegeBoard SAT book thing (the blue one).
Did the SAT Question of the Day for like a month. Kind of useless, but anything helps.
I was surprised...you could be pleasantly surprised too!

yea i got a 2400 too

I've been doing SAT Question of the Day for at least 3 months... but... :(

grateful bhikku, you didn't get a 2400

I did 4 practice tests and got a 2280, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

I did 5 practice tests for Chem II and got a 800.

I'm tellin ya, if you go through the tests ur mind picks up patterns.

fabre, if you haven't, read the "Xiggi's SAT prep advice" post at the top of this forum. Books can help, but you have to pick and choose the things that work for you. Also, practice is great, but be sure to carefully review your practice tests. Make sure you understand why you missed the questions you missed. Look for faster ways to solve the problems that took you a long time to get right. Just taking practice tests without reviewing your mistakes probably won't help much.

It's really a mind thing. If you get used to the type of questions they ask, then you will do well. That's probably the benefit of taking lots of practice tests. Then again, I took only 1 practice test in math 2, physics, and chem and still got 800s on them. So who really knows?

FAKEOUT

sx, did you take sat 2's and the SAT 1 in june?

I was wondering where one would find actual "College Board" tests..

BTW.... I'm assuiming the old sat's are not released BUT.. has anyone compiled all the past "Questions of the day"... (with answers)?... heh probably not but those could have been of some help.

what tests should we take after we finish all college board tests?

you can purchase an online program that they offer at collegeboard.com
i THINK it has a couple additional tests and explanations to ALL tests (the blue book included)

done that already

i have an entire walk in closet filled to the brim w/ sat practice books. i did them. my dad proctored. but of course he got bored and fell asleep so i cheated and looked at the answers. go me. :)

Let ur brain emerged into ques ques and ques....sometimes at one point u will do every ques right that u don't even know why this is the rite ans...

Practice let u get a feeling of the test.....

but what if all collegeboard tests are finished? should I use other test prep books?
