Does putting "Asian" down for race hurt you?

You are definetely right that UC schools do this to Asians much more often, siply b/c they have many more Asian applicants then other schools. Some of them are like over 40% asian vs. 4% of the population, that is huge.

Putting Asian isn't going to hurt you. If you stand out as a person, and not by race, you will get in. Plus, you can't really say that because of your race, you didn't get in. You don't know that! You are just assuming that is the reason, which could be totally wrong.

I'm asking since I don't know. What is the approximate percentage of the population in CA that is asian?

The percentage of asians in the top CA colleges does seem very high and that makes me believe that adcoms there might be trying to lower it, so that the freshman class mirrors society. The same thing can be said for whites, of course, but for whites to be that overrepresented, the percentage of whites would have to be 300%.

For an individual, I agree with glucose. This discussion is really about statistical trends. In an individual case, you might be denied because you play the violin and the orchestra needed an oboe player.

It affects an individual applicant, but lets not forget the preferential treatment given to legacies, athletes, development cases and VIP's. It isn't all about race.
