Does Quitting a Sport during Senior Year Affect Admission into Ivy League/Top Schools?

I’m not sure if i posted this in the right place lol, but here’s my question:

I have been playing field hockey since freshmen year. I was on JV for two years, I was on Varsity last year, and I am currently on varsity this year. But, I have never enjoyed the sport and it is not the main focus of my application. The only reason why I would want to include it was because last year we made it to the state finals. It It is also one of the sports I played in order to get scholar athlete.

But, how bad will it look if I quit now? Will it affect my acceptance? I just do not enjoy playing at all, and the only reason I am still playing is because I don’t want it to hurt my application.

No problem. If you don’t get into an Ivy, it won’t be because you quit field hockey. If you don’t like it, don’t play.

So why did you want to get Scholar Athlete? Are you still participating in other sports?

If this is a fall sport and you are still doing other sports, feel free to quit! You will spend the fall doing your college apps.

I asked the SAME exact question (same sport too) four years ago on behalf of my daughter. Got same advice as above.

If you already have an acceptance, then it should not matter since you were not recruited for this sport.

If not yet accepted to any schools, then it is hard to gauge the effect that quitting your sport will have on your chances of admission without reading your entire application. What if your teacher recs stressed that you are not a quitter, or what if your essay stressed your commitment to all of your activities ?

So you have other, more significant ECs?
What makes you think top schools are in the picture (you don’t sound recruitable so I’m assuming you weren’t counting on field hockey.)

@MYOS1634 I do have more significant ECs. I’m not going to go into full detail now, but I’ll eventually post a thread in the “What Are my Chances?” section.

@twoinanddone @bopper @brantly @Publisher Thanks for the advice! But I decided to just tough it out for another year, I didn’t want to take a risk

@bopper
I’m on the varsity track team too. I wanted scholar athlete because it’s a good academic achievement.

Is the season already in process? We didn’t let our kids quit mid season for the most part (once one did for academic reasons).

If you have other significant ECs and you’re not recruitable, then you should only participate if it sounds fun. it would not matter for Admissions
