I’m a rising high school senior. I have been playing field hockey at the JV level since freshman year. I am TERRIBLE at the sport. I have never been a varsity starter, stat leader, nothing. I absolutely hate the sport and it gives me anxiety attacks and depression. And I have no intentions of playing in college.
I go to a medium size but rather competitive high school. My stats are competitive for my school 4.3 GPA, 1530 (790,740). I have one excellent EC (cannot specify, but trust me), and, if I drop out, have connections to an internship and will look to get a job.
I have been contemplating dropping out since last year but my parents, friends, teachers, advisors have told me not to because the “continuity” factor may hurt me in college admissions. Should I be worried? Can I drop out?
If you replace the field hockey with something you find more interesting/meaningful that is fine. The only exception would be if you were on track to be a recruited athlete which is not your situation.
I agree with @happy1…ECs should be things you enjoy, get exercise from, learn from, make friends from…if field hockey does none of those things then why bother? Use this time to explore some other interest.
Of course you can drop it. Kids get injured and have a change of heart all the time. If you are not sure of your interests right now you might consider a part time job to fill the void.
Field hockey is a spring sport, so your applications will be in before your season even starts and whether you participate is probably irrelevant. Having said that, you should NEVER do an EC just for college application reasons. If it isn’t a passion going into you senior year, drop it.
