Does reading actual novels help Sat Critical Reading?

Shouldn't I just read from the New York Times and other News papers everyday rather than read novels? I ask this because articles in the news paper are more similar to SAT critical reading more than novels. Or should I focus on more practice test rather than reading both? I have about 23 practice test and I'm taking the Sat December for private colleges so I have time. Thanks.

The language on the SAT CR is all relatively modern, so the question is one of comprehension or questions. If you’re having trouble reading the passages and getting to all the questions, or if the vocabulary/syntax is tripping you up, more reading, period, will be helpful. (Without thinking it through a lot, the NYT would certainly be more helpful than ‘classic’ novels, though contemporary fiction would also be helpful, as well as scholarly texts.)

However, if you’re having trouble with question types or the specific way the SAT phrases things, go with the practice tests.

LOL It helps increase your tolerance to boring passages…

And I guess the vocab is a plus too.

Yes, reading novels increases your reading comprehension and introduces you to the vocabulary on the SAT that is found almost solely in 19th and 18th century novels.

thank you, so I’ll just read more news papers and take lots of practice test. Vocab isn’t really a problem. Since I still have AP English I’ll still be reading boring passages so I guess it works in my favor. My reading is fast and my focus (though not excellent) is still good enough to get the jist of the passage.

It can’t harm you, so It does benefit. But I believe it isn’t worth reading 5 books a week just to improve your comprehension. Reading will help if you do it consistently for a year.

If you want quick results then learn how to read the SAT passages. Get RR

Ive literally only read Harry Potter books and I got a high CR score. My only issue was vocab which I guess reading could help - as long as you pay attention !! I think doing the practice tests is more helpful. The SAT uses very common themes, so repeatition and practice will make a big difference. You just need to know what they’re looking for.

Yes, the more you read and the better the reader you are, the more likely you are to do better on CR. And reading often will definitely help with the vocab.

Read tough material. This will help your analyzing skills.

Just do practice tests.

It is hard to study for CR.

It’s a lot different than brushing up on your basic math.

Reading novels at this late date would be a total waste of time, in my view.

I doubt that reading novels right now would help you with the SAT. However, I found one way to study for the SAT are these special novels that bold vocab words in the text and provide you with a definition. I’m not sure how hard the words are relatively but they sure are entertaining.

It’ll help! Reading NY can help develop your vocabulary skills.
