Our older daughter's college has a Parent/Family Weekend, but so far I haven't come across any indication that Rice has something like this. (I've searched a bit here and on the website.)

Does Rice have such a thing?

Yes, here is what you are searching for:

[Rice University | Families Weekend - Home](Families Weekend | Rice University)

Yes! I don’t know anything about it though. When I visited Rice it was family weekend, and the September something 2009 edition of the Rice Thresher had an article about family weekend, I remember reading it.

Also I found this. It’s 2009 I think but it might help you.

Edit: lol nice jben. beat me to it ;)

Thank you! (How did I miss that?)

I noticed that parents can actually attend a class with their students on Friday (at least that was the case last year). Do parents actually do that?

Appreciate your help. Now I can begin to sync up our fall calendar.

We attended classes on the Friday. We just did her major classes, not all of them, but it was fun. We were not the only ones there.

We didn’t attend any classes but we sent his hs brother along. We used the time to get to know Houston a little better and caught up with the boys after classes. Rice also plans a lot of events for parents- lectures, meeting staff members and other things specifically for parents. You will have to pick and choose from all the options.

Went last year and had a really good time. Sat in on two lectures - a large intro physics class (lots of seats for parents; probably 20 or so present) and a small intro comp sci class (20 or so students, 4 or 5 parents). I really enjoyed both. The physics prof was engaging with lots of demos in a large lecture setting. The computer class was conducted as an open discussion of computational strategy - it was very good and I had to restrain myself from answering questions in the computer class!
I really enjoyed the ‘meet the house house master’ event, seeing the new rec center and attending the bbq/football game.
It was well worth visiting and may well go again this year.
