Does Rice waitlist a large number of students?

Does Rice follow Washu's waitlist trend? I haven't seen many rejections. Is it going to be very difficult to get off the waitlist this year? Anyone know?

It’s very difficult to predict. I was admitted off of the waitlist three years ago, but I think only a few got in from the waitlist last year. I have a feeling, though, that with the current economic situation and various other factors Rice will be a lot more careful with admissions this year, and more students will be taken off of the waitlist.

Last year 700 were put on the waitlist, 4 cleared. Yes, four.

oh…so really, I should just consider myself rejected…eventho I didn’t receive the “official” rejection letter

No, you shouldn’t. It’s certainly possible to be accepted off of the waitlist, and if you really like Rice it’s a good idea to keep your name on it.

are you sure it was 4/700??

Somehow that seems hard to believe

from what I understand, it is 4% out of waitlist !

okay… that makes better sense.

Still, not everyone accepts a position on the waitlist so… I’ll hope for the best

It’s not that hard to believe. Rice had a much higher yield last year than was expected, and there was essentially a housing crisis at the beginning of the summer. When it was later in the summer, it may have been apparent that four beds were open, so four students were admitted. It makes perfect sense.

But two years ago, a lot of people (myself and Dorian included) were accepted off of the waitlist. So don’t assume that it’s an automatic rejection.

AAt the same time, don’t hold out hope. When someone asks you what college you’re going to, say, "I’m going to _," not “I’m going to , unless I get taken off the waitlist at Rice.” Assume that you’re going to . Get excited about that.

Anyone have a clue about how many got waitlisted this year? I know a **** load of people that got waitlisted and this is unlike of Rice’s norm. Seriously i think many of the qualified applicants got rejected in TX…

Still being one of the 700 on the waitlist isn’t bad considering they had over 11000 applicants… So like 2000 accepted, 700 waitlisted, and 8000ish rejected… Does this sound right???

I believe 100 came of the waitlist several years ago; only 4 last year. This year, NOONE knows; not the admissions people, and certainly not us. Good luck to you all.

Anxiousmom is correct: almost 100 a few years back, 4 last year. Perhaps they are putting more on waitlist this year as a way to hedge the uncertainty. If more people choose state schools or other offerings, more will come off the waitlist. Last year’s yield was higher than anyone could’ve anticipated.
One thing is clear, if you are waitlisted and still want Rice (or any waitlisted school), you will need to demonstrate your desire and not just stay on a waitlist and hope. Waitlist with passion and determination, but put your deposit elsewhere (just one) and either way you will thrive and love your school.

I think Rice’s yield will continue to move up. If you were wait listed it would be best to move on to your other choices now. That is not to say do not get on the wait list - just that the odds are VERY low so, as others have already said, focus on your other top pick.

I bet that more will be taken off of the wait list this year because of the economy, compared to last year.

Agreed, the people in the 8k+ EFC range will be majorly screwed (judging from the other threads.)

My EFC is 3.9k and my parents make less than 60k, so that means 100% financial need.

Lets hope I get off this stupid waitlist.

agreed. lol

I got waitlisted too and I thought Rice was a guarantee. I don’t think they expected so many people to apply. Usually they get about 8000 applicants and have an acceptance rate of 23-25%. This year their acceptance rate was at 17-18%.

Yeah. I hate it.
I think I would have been accepted if I wasn’t from Texas (I live 6 minutes from Rice.)
