Does skipping a grade me you look good in college applications?

I have always wondered if skipping a grade makes you look good on college applications? If you are 2 years younger than a majority of the graduating class, does that make you stand out?

It depends … some kids that skip a grade are smart academically, but most are not at the same social level as their peers. It makes you stand out as possibly being in that category of smart, but likely not in the same social atmosphere. If you are in this situation, make sure you can express how you get along socially with kids 2+ years older than you. College is about the academics, but there are other important components, too.

^ This is a good point. Admission is obviously primarily concerned with academics, but colleges don’t want someone that is going to have trouble socially. I’d subtly make references to doing things with your friends throughout your application.

P.S. that last part is kind of a joke, but you get the idea

another way to show you are socially adept is to be a leader among your peers - if people 2 years older respect you, that shows something. this can be done by leading a club, tutoring people in a classroom environment (which will hopefully come across in teacher recs) and doing community service. some colleges let you submit a letter from someone who is not a teacher (sometimes even a peer) - choose someone who can show that you are mature.

It doesn’t matter. Many students skip grades. They compare you to your graduating class.
