I live in California and really want to get into UCLA or Berkeley. Does being a California resident give me a higher chance over others?
Why worry about things you can’t control anyway? You like in CA and wil be applying and you will get in or not regardless if you know the answer to that or not.
CA schools are supported by CA taxpayers and the primary purpose is to educate the state residents. But they are taking out of state students for diversity and for the big bucks OOS tuition. I wouldn’t really consider that you are competing against OOS students but from students in your very own state. This year was particularly rough…
Admission standards for both schools is very high for in-state and out of state applicants. You’ll need near perfect grades and test scores and solid ECs no matter where you are from. About 25% of the freshman class @ Cal is from outside CA.-LA is similar. I haven’t seen the stats but, I bet as much as half of applicants are OOS - showing a definite preference for in-state applicants.
