I’m a junior in high school and many students in my school have taken AP Chem in their junior year, along with AP Lang and APUSH (and some AP Spanish).
However, I took AP Lang, APUSH, and AP CS.
This is because last year, when we were filling in our course requests, one of the counselors told me that I could only take 6 academic classes (what i took: ap lang, apush, ap cs, physics h, math analysis/calc a, and spanish 3). They told me i could only take 3 aps because i could only take 6 academic classes. i chose apcs because i really like cs and it was a requirement to take an artifical intelligence class i wanted to take in 12th grade. I thought I could just take ap chem in 12th grade.
However, apparently they let some other students take 4 aps (lang, ush, cs, and chem). I told the counselors, but they said it was too late to change my request.
My question is: does it make a difference if i take ap chem in 11th or 12th grade? i know some people took it in 11th grade because they wanted space to take ap bio in 12th grade (but i’m not taking ap bio b/c i’m not going into bio), and others took it because it was an AP class. Would taking ap chem or not taking ap chem junior year make a difference in college admissions? I’m still taking it senior year.
No, I don’t think it matters. My DS20 is taking AP Chem right now as a senior, along with AP Physics C. He took Honors Chem as a soph, then AP Physics 1 as a junior. I think it all depends on what is offered at your school and how it works out with how loaded with APs you want each year to be. As long as you’re taking a rigorous schedule overall, that’s what is beneficial.
My older son took AP Chem senior year because he loved physics and took that junior year. He majored in CS and took a CS AP as a freshman, but the school didn’t have any more advanced options. My younger son hated chemistry which he took as a freshman and took AP Bio as a junior and AP Physics as a senior - he was planning on majoring in IR. They both did fine admissionswise.
So do you think my schedule is still “rigorous” with ap lang, apush, and apcs, along with 3 other honors classes for a junior year? (by the way, my target is university of southern california w/ a merit scholarship)
Please let me know; the counselors at school are really new and don’t know much… but you guys have experience. Thank you!! Any input would be appreciated!
