I am currently a freshman. I was wondering if it would look bad if I did Chem II over the summer at either CC or Loyola?

It is generally suggested that you not take a course at a CC during the summer. I’m not really sure about taking summer courses at a 4 year college, although I have read that sometimes that is frowned on too because summer courses may be considered less rigorous than courses during the year. Having said that however, my son’s friend took orgo 1 & 2 one summer at a CC. He was accepted at 8 med schools. The rest of his application was very strong with a high GPA, significantly above average MCAT and many hours of shadowing along with some research.

You should talk to the pre-med adviser at your college before deciding.

It is better not to take pre-reqs in a summer.
Previous experiences are not quarantee for the future. It is getting tougher every year.
Actually it is the best not to do much in a summer (unless you are lucky to find a job). Just take it easy, sleep in, spend time with friends. Those UG free summers will not last, you will be sorry that you did not enjoy them as much as you should.

Take something else during the summer. If you are trying to lighten your load for next year, choose a non-premed science class.

That said, there is nothing wrong with Loyola Chicago…it has a very good med school.

Does anyone think med schools will care if you take a psych or sociology class during the summer? I am thinking that they won’t care.

If you need to start the Organic sequence in the fall, I can see that you need to get the 2nd semester of general Chem out of the way. It would be better to take it at your school - again, all the advice is to not take it during the summer, especially at a CC. I honestly don’t know for sure if adcoms across the board are against it. D took her 2nd semester of Physics at a local 4 year college during their maymester after her sophomore year, because she frankly hated Physics, her school is very rigorous (AKA grade deflation!) and only has a Calculus based Physics sequence, and she couldn’t stomach the thought of 14 more weeks of it at her school. During her med school interviews, no one asked her about it. But that is one person’s experience. If you do take it at a CC during the summer, shoot for an A, and make sure all the rest of your application is strong - especially the GPA at your college.
