Does that make me crazy?

Hey, if you wouldnt mind evaluating me for chances of the schools I've listed below or adding any ones you think would be good. Also, realize that running the business I've founded and also trying to get another one off the ground takes A LOT of time but its something I love doing.

GPA: 3.54 unweighted 3.69 weighted
ACT: 26 (retaking)
SAT: 1830 (retaking)
Should get good recs and should write a great essay

ECS
-founded my own business which works with Amazon.com in book sales and distribution
-I love trading stocks and started when I was in grade school
-often talk about starting a business and the importance of academics to kids in underdeveloped communities (having been doing this on a regular basis for 2 years now) through a group that links business leaders to youth.
-berekly model UN
-summer at brown econ class
-taking two college classes at local community college
-Vice President (10,11) President (12) of a the teen advisory board which acts as a liaison between teens and the city council

-I go to a top 100 school according to Us news or whatever even though I dont believe in that ranking system at all!

Brown---dream school
Claremont Mckenna –2nd choice
Pepperdine
Carnegie Mellon
Bates
New York University
University of San Diego (not UCSD and not the cal state san diego)

These colleges may seem really random but I have my own personal reasons for liking them.

Im a hispanic (Mexican American) californian and would not need financial aid. Thanks for your help!

Brown - Impossible Reach
Claremont McKenna - Impossible Reach
Bates - Reach
Carnegie Mellon - Reach
NYU - Reach
Pepperdine - Match
USD - Safety

Brown: Huge reach
Claremont McKenna: Big Reach
Pepperdine: Match
Carnegie Mellon: Reach
NYU: Slight Reach
USD: Safety

I don't think Brown and Claremont McKenna are huge or impossible reaches. Kevin obvious has decent grades, and the only thing that might compromise his chances are the low standardized test scores, which he can improve through studying and prepping. If he manages to raise his ACT or SAT scores then I think he has a decent chance at his top choices. Of course, his being a minority will only help him and his ECs are certainly impressive.

Ehh, I don't think 3.69 weighted is very good for Brown or CMC. Sorry. Maybe the Mexican can help a little but...Brown is reach yes. Anyway I agree with Flippy except to say UCSD is match.

It's not UCSD.

It's USD.

if I get the test scores up (which i think i could because I didnt study for them at all) do u think i will have a better chance at claremont Mckenna and brown?

Any ideas for other schools that may be good for me?

founded your own business.... awesome

impossible reach to brown, agreed

nothing's impossible, my stats are worst than his and I got into U of Chicago.

If he pulls a 29+, I think CMC and Brown are feasible, still big reaches, but feasible. The problem I think most are having is that they simply see his test scores and GPA and go, meh...however, his EC's are quite excellent, and he is a Mexican with no financial need. It comes down to this Kevin, if you pull that ACT/SAT up to the 1300+ level, and potray yourself well and make those unique and wonderful EC's look great, then you will have a shot at any of those schools. Good luck!

Sorry...why did I type that when I SAW that he referred to USD and not UCSD and made a mental note of it? I guess it was late. Yes USD is a safety.

Brown has 94% of their accepted applicants rank in the top 10% of their class. He has a 3.54, which isn't top 10%. Right there is bottom 6%.

Brown has an ACT range of 27-33. His score is a 26. That puts him in the bottom 25%.

Then i'll go on to ECs which are way below average for an Ivy. Where is the involvement in the school? There is one club that I see. Do you sit on your computer all day?

And to top it all off, Brown only accepts 14% of their applicants in the first place. And he is way below average for the 14%, he's looking at around a 1% chance.

Yes, miracles have happened before. Anna Nicole Smith really did lose all that weight with Trim Spa. But Brown isn't happening. You can waste your money on the application if you want. Ditto for Claremont McKenna

Ouch, that's harsh

I'm just being honest. I went through all this last year. It just sickens me when kids come out and say "You should at least try! You stand a chance if you can do X and X." That's bunk. Schools are mainly stats based, and if you at least don't fit the minimum guidelines for these schools, it would be a waste to apply. I even saw the advice in this thread about how if he raised his SAT/ACT scores that he would have a better chance. Yeah, it could raise his chances to 2%. His grades don't cut it for Brown/Claremont McKenna. Valedictorians only get accepted 26% of the time there, and a kid outside the top 10% stands no chance.

I'll respectfully disagree but w/e floats your boat.

Haha I have to respond to A2Wolves6 rude and unnecessary comments.

"Brown has 94% of their accepted applicants rank in the top 10% of their class. He has a 3.54, which isn't top 10%. Right there is bottom 6%."
-I never said anything about rank in my thread. It is very hard to get above a 3.7 at my school and the school profile shows that. My school does not rank. You obviously dont take into consideration a schools reputation and group all schools as being the same which is crazy.

"Brown has an ACT range of 27-33. His score is a 26. That puts him in the bottom 25%."
I told you I didnt study for any tests yet. When I do, I will do great I am sure.

"Then i'll go on to ECs which are way below average for an Ivy. Where is the involvement in the school? There is one club that I see. Do you sit on your computer all day?"

Wow. If founding a business that grosses enough for me to drive a mercedes and live in the wealthiest city in the country isnt good enough I dont know what is. I am also part of clubs on campus, even founder and president of an investment club, I just thought the fact that I owned a very successful business trumped that!

"Do you sit on your computer all day?"

Is that honestly what you think I do. Come on now

kevinhaspockets:

i fully agree with A2Wolves6. his analysis is thourough and helpful. he has taken the time to give you an impressive evaluation of chances, but your ignorance only blinds your eyes, allowing you to produce the above petty responses.

regardless of your school, your GPA, SAT, ACT, and EC combined gives you 0 chance at Brown. whether or not you are mature enough to take that is questionable, but the fact remains. you do not stand out.

from your posts you appear to be arrogant, immature, and probably spoiled. i wish you best of luck, but you do need a reality check.

once again, A2Wolves6, great job on the analysis. keep it up with other chances threads.

Apply to Brown with the mindset that it is a huge longshot. No one can predict admissions 100%. You said you don't need fin aid, so $70 dollars for a chance to attend you dream school is worth it.
