Does the "apply early" mentality for med school applications also apply to residency applications?

Program deadlines are November 1; PDs start downloading application on Sept 15 and MSPEs are released October 1 with IIs starting to be issued shortly thereafter.

Late applicants will be competing for fewer available interview slots.

Almost everyone I know submits on that 9/15 deadline. Everyone submits by the end of that week.
