Im a high school student right now and ive never been able to study without the tv on or something like that. I am hoping it will be easier to focus on studying because u will have things like libraries in such close proximity to your living arrangements.

Does the College Environment make it easier to focus?

haha. definitely not. DEF not.

Like 10x harder to study in college than in high school.

why exactly

No, definitely not. There's always people nearby you can hear having fun and there's so much to do! But going to the library regularly does help. Pick a quiet spot and regular hours to be there (like 2 hours each weeknight or something).

LOL definitely not. it is infinitely harder to study in college because you are surrounded by all this fun stuff and 20,000 other people your age who are doing things when you are trying to study. Studying in a dorm is a BAD idea, all around. Definitely make yourself go to the library if you need to get some heavy duty studying done because if you don't you will constantly be distracted.

i wonder this too.

i have bad study habits now, will it be too late to turn it around in college?

it seems like there could actually be MORE distractions in HS... because in HS, most of the kids around you are fooling around. but in college, everyone knows they've gotta set out time to study.

ex:

college buddy: "hey, are we going out tonight?"
me: "nah man, it's finals week. everyone's staying in."
college buddy: "oh yeah, how could i forget. let's hit up the library then."

HS buddy: "hey, are we going out tonight?"
me: "nah man, i have this big AP Chem test on Monday. i've gotta study."
HS buddy: "lolz! who actually studies for school? our Yearbook final is to write a sentence about how much we learned over the semester. you're a loser dude"

well... exaggerated lol but you get the point.

Well, it depends on the friends you make and where you go:

College is huge. If you force yourself into the library then you'll waste less time. Always do to the basement or the most isolated, quiet place in the library.

On the other hand, there's way more emphasis on social "networking" and clubs at college. On average, people study less.

Every college has seminars that teach study/college survival skills. College is easier for some and harder for others. You might see if there is a study skills seminar at a local college that will let you attend to see what it is like.

Depends on how social you are. For me it's actually easier, because I have access to isolated places that are perfect for studying all the time, and boy, you get a lot of things done when you are sitting in a room with nothing but a desk and a white, white wall..

But there are actually more distractions in college: More interesting people, more interesting parties, more freedom.

NOT a realistic scenario.
try this one instead:

college buddy: hey, are we going out tonight?
you: nah man, it's finals week. everyone's staying in.
college buddy: come ON, man, EVERYONE'S getting f****d up tonight! people are throwing down on elm street and walnut street and all the frat houses..we gotta go out!
you: i really need to study..
college buddy: nahhh! you can study tomorrow! it's a reading day! we haven't gone out together in soooo long, man! at LEAST smoke some green with me!
you: well, okay..i'll come out but i'm not staying out late! gotta study tomorrow..

at this point you'll go out, drink heavily until 3 a.m., and stumble home. then you'll wake up at 1'o'clock the next day & start studying.

This is why I like UofC. People study when you have to study. They care a lot about their classes and studying for the test so I doubt there will be too many ppl going out and getting *ed up during finals week. I live in San Diego and during San Diego State finals, everyone parties and gets *ed up. It all depends on your school.

lol leah's got it right. that's usually what happens.
it'll be like,
"hey i think i'll study tonight, my final's in 3 days, that's probably a good idea even if it is Friday."
buddy calls "yo whats up? there is this crunk-tastic party at so-and-so's tonight we HAVE to gooooo"
"but... finals..."
"pssh, your first finals not til Monday, you have all weekend to study!"
"well... okay... i did get this really cute dress the other day..."
"f*** yeah! call me when you leave!"

Actually, it's nothing like that if you have some form of self-control.

lol, well it would probably depend on where you go. i mean, most of the schools i applied to are pretty academic focused, so kids are pretty much into the whole "work hard, play hard" thing. and if i end up at my state school, i'd probably be in the Honors dorms which are known to be pretty quiet.

true.

IDK, I have a friend who just graduated from UofC and he partied 3-4 days a week, including finals week.

I think it is. I feel like I should be doing work in college. I feel like when I go home I'm on vacation.

so kids are pretty much into the whole "work hard, play hard" thing.

i think my school is probably a perfect example of an atmosphere like that^^

If you commute, yes. If you live in a dorm, most likely no.

i disagree with most of you. it is easy to study in college because you are surrounded by a lot of high achievers and when you see them study it kinda rubs off on you.
