Yes, I heard about the WSJ article. 4 of my classes dedicated a whole period to discussing it.
It is mostly untrue. First, the PTA co-president was misquoted. All of her answers were taken out of context. Second, the suicide of the student from NYU should not be blamed on MV since it was a relationship gone bad. Third, it was just plain racist.

thats true, but still while CA has some of the best high schools, there are even more not so average schools.

i agree. i thought it was more sensationalism than anything. and the nyu student...a lot of people commit suicide in college for various reasons.

Woah, a lot of CA people here. *waves.

So.. hm.. for a class of 556, what rank would considered okay for the UC's (specifically UCSD)? top 10? 50? 100?
(MSJHS here)

ooh, do you know someone named florence?

i think for sd, top 50 is good...? well, i have no idea.

Yay for Orange County...

Last year the graduating class of 2005 in Mission San Jose had 56 ppl going to UCBerkeley, 32 going to UCLA, 31 to UCSD, 42 to Davis, and 29 to Irvine.

If you go to MSJ, I wouldn't worry too much if I was you.

What would you do if you went to a school that is bad? At my school only about 10 people each year get into UCs, one person went to Hopkins last year, another to Williams 2 years ago, and one to Princeton 10 years ago..... Does this mean that I'm doomed to not get into top universities?

of course not.

I'm from NJ and can tell you that the schools around here are cursed. It's rare for anyone to get accepted to top tier schools because of our school profile. About 48% of kids in my high school go on to four-year colleges, the average SAT math score is 490, etc. My grade is probably the most competitive grade that clearview has ever seen. Well, the top 10 all have GPAs within a point of eachother. I guess that's competitive. I kind of wish I went to school in CA.

Maybe my school isn't so bad, but the average SAT score around here is 1010 (on the old SAT) :(
