I know (obviously) that it’s harder to get accepted into Wharton than it is to get accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences. But within a certain school, let’s say for example the College, is it easier to get accepted if you put a major that is less popular than it is to be accepted if you put a major that is really popular? I know they say they don’t have quotas, but I’m slightly wary…

On a similar note, I put down "undecided" on my app (under CAS). Will that look bad?

I want to study math or economics, but don't want to look like a Wharton backdooree (econ) and am also worried that I'm not distinguished enough when it comes to math (my math SAT isn't sky-high; it's low- to mid-700s).

The only thing that the intended major thing does is pick an academic advisor related to your field. And sometimes that doesn't even apply. don't worry about things as menial as that.

plus there is a HIGH percentage that you're major will change when you start taking different classes as an undergrad-and admins know that!

PPE and BBB are two of the most popular majors in the College.

i almost feel bad doing plain old polisci.

jpps1: i think you'll be fine. it could even help if you talked about "the importance of a liberal arts degree, yada yada yada"

I think there is a lot more pressure to express your area of interest than there used to be, not just at Penn but all over. It would have been unheard of to have to write an essay on your intended major years ago, as some of the schools require now. I think they do this, for exactly the reasons you fear - if they see yet another poli sci, psych, econcomics major versus a nice French literature or physics major , I'll bet it does make a difference. Atlantic Monthly just blew the lid off the need blind myth, I'm sure schools have their ways of sorting out the majors, too.

BTW, what is the BBB major?

BBB stands for biological basis of behavior so u basically study why humans and animals do things from a biological, neurological, and psychological point of view

http://www.psych.upenn.edu/bbb/AboutBBB.htm

darn y do colleges have to be so secretive about these things...

its a WASP conspiracy

u think it's safe to say that low scores (say 600's) in bio would keep one out if they declare a bio major, and the same for other majors?

what's PPE???

"a nice French literature or physics major " why, oh why, would anyone become a physics major???? >_< lol, sorry, i just have bad experiences from ap physics...

politics, philosophy, and economics
