I'm an international applicant. In Commonapp you invite the teacher and then i guess everything goes behind the curtain ,right. DO THE TEACHERS OR THE COUNCELOR KNOW THE SCHOOLS YOU ARE APPLYING?And i'm really embarassed to tell my teachers to what school i'm applying.thank you ANY INFO WOULD BE HELPFUL

Any teacher who once wrote a recomm. letter should know the answer , i think. So guys plaese answer me

I don’t know about the teacher but the counceler does have access to the list of school you’re applying to.

I will say that if your teachers do not have in mind the sort of school you’re targeting, your rec letters will be rather bland and forgetable.

If you’re targeting selective colleges, this will help

If your relationship is so shallow with your rec writers that you’d be embarrassed, I think that’s a sign of trouble, to be frank.

Best of luck to you however

I think it would be difficult to ask a teacher for a letter and not tell the teacher. The best letters are from teachers who know their students. For a teacher to decide that the student is a good match for the college- he/she needs to know which college (s). The school has to send transcripts somewhere, so yes, someone knows if not the teacher.
The letter the teacher writes to the common app is not college specific, as the same letter is sent out to each school. Once the letter is in the application, you can choose to send it to additional colleges. You don’t have to ask the teacher for an additional letter at this point. However, the school will still need to send a transcript to that school. Since many students apply to several schools, it’s not unusual for a student to add one or more along the way.
A teacher who is interested in you, and is writing a letter on your behalf, would be interested in your college choices. It’s best to keep this process open. The college may request additional information from the teacher, and eventually, if you attend that college, it will be aparent that you applied.

Since many students apply to a number of schools, there can be a number of reasons. If the issue is selectivity- it’s a good idea to have a range of selectivity in your list as well, so a student can possibly have Ivy’s and less selective schools on their college lists. I assume you have a good reason for your college choice.

“i’m really embarassed to tell my teachers to what school i’m applying”

Then what will you tell them if you are accepted and you do choose to go there?

If you are applying to multiple colleges and universities, then you don’t need to give the full list because the name of that many places can’t be put into the letter. You do need to let the teacher know the type of institution, and your potential major field of study (if you have one) so that they can write a good letter.

Thank you all
