Does this college visit trip sound realistic?

I'll be going to San Francisco for a Friday-Saturday business trip in several weeks. We're thinking of maybe having my son - just starting junior year - come with me and visit Berkeley one day and Stanford the other day. He would do the campus tours by himself.

A couple of other things worth mentioning.

These would be the first college visits.

He's a very independent kid and has no trouble getting around NYC, even NY State by himself.

We don't have any top choices yet; remember, he's just starting his junior year. So this would just be a way to get a framework for what a college is like and all that. The fact that his mom and I won't be going is not really a loss. If either school is a contender 15 months from now we could certainly bear the hardship of another trip to the Bay Area.

And one other question: Is there a quality LAC that we could include? Instead of two larger universities, ideally he would start with one big school and one small school. But it's not that important, as we can easily do a day trip to lots of quality LACs from NYC.

I would recommend taking a look at either Santa Clara University (a bit south of Palo Alto) or the University of San Francisco. If your son were a daughter, I'd recommend Mills College in Oakland, but alas.

Otherwise, you could check out Dominican University, St. Mary's College of California (in Moraga), or the University of Notre Dame de Namur, although it looks like you're considering a different caliber of school.

Good luck.

USF will probably be easier to get to if you are stuck in meetings downtown.
