I was wondering if this was something that i could and should put on my college application. Last year, I spent my summer going to my country (Bangladesh) as a way to understand my country and learn the history of a country which gained its independence less than 50 years ago.

What i learned from the summer visit:
1) How to speak fluent Bengali
2) Cultural traditions, food and why the foods were eaten, etc
3) The different political parties and what each political party is in favor of.

It wasn't really part of a program, but I just thought it was something interesting. So should i put it in any part of my college application? If so, Which one?

I’ve seen that some applicants have a section in their resume called “Summer Activities” or something like that, in which they include things like a summer-long stay in a foreign country that was not part of an organized program. Often it’s a visit to their families’ native land. I can see why one would want to include it on a resume; otherwise there would be an entire summer unaccounted for. But the important thing, if you are going to put the trip on your resume, is that you can demonstrate how it was meaningful to you. It may be you write about it in an essay. But at the very least you should be able to talk about it intelligently in an interview if you are interviewed.
