Does this disqualify me from admission?

Hey y’all,

I go to a competitive MA private school–not the very top, but in the teens ranking. We send maybe three kids to Yale a year, but often times two are legacy and the third is a wild card. Our school is quite difficult, in fact no one has graduated with a perfect GPA (4.00) with in the last decade. I have about a 3.75, I have mostly a’s and a-'s and one b+ for our equivalent of AP Chem (full year course) and one b+ for our equivalent of AP US history (only one semester) both junior year. Then I have some B’s and B+'s in arts, which are required and do go into our GPAs. I’d estimate by the end of this semester, without including arts, my GPA’s about a 3.8. I have taken the absolute most difficult classes in every subject. I also was two questions away from a 2400. I know Yale is ridiculous and I’m expecting a deferral, but is my GPA the disqualifying factor? I look at the past acceptances and see 4.00 after 4.00 after 4.00 :(( I don’t want to get into specifics but I have very strong ECs. Can I get in despite my GPA?

The stats and background you’ve shared with us are not dissimilar to DS’s. He was accepted 2 years ago. IMO, you can get in “despite” your GPA. That’s not to say that you will, but I don’t think anything you’ve shared will disqualify you. Good luck.

If you got rejected/deferred, your GPA is not solely going to be the reason why. And if you’re accepted, you’ll be accepted for your other strengths, aside from your GPA. At this point, there’s no need to stress out about it- it’s out of your control.

As every high school has a different curriculum, different course rigor, different grading systems and different expectations for their students, it would be unfair for Yale – or any college really – to directly compare student’s from one high school to another. So they don’t!

All colleges, including Yale, compare you to your peers at YOUR high school. Your guidance counselor fills out the Secondary School Report (SSR) in which they rank you against your peers in terms of both your GPA and course rigor. See page 2: http://www.du.edu/apply/media/documents/2012CASSR.pdf. So long as your GC selects that you have taken the MOST RIGOROUS course load at your school, and that your GPA is somewhere near the highest GPA in your class, you’ll be fine.

FWIW: Most private colleges, including Yale, rates applicants on a 1-6 or 1-9 scale. It’s those numerical ratings that then get compared from one high school to another. Yale has not been as forthcoming about their process as Harvard, but I doubt the Admissions process differs that much. Here’s a great article to read to get an overview of the holistic process: http://www.bostonmagazine.com/2006/05/keys-to-the-kingdom/

There are a lot of competitive high schools where 4.0 GPAs are scarce. My D’s school has had only about 15 students graduate with a 4.0 in its 40+ year history. And, its a regular feeder school for Yale/Harvard and the other Ivies as well. There is more to a school than just the GPAs of its students and the AdComs are very well versed in those schools in their area of responsibility.

Does your school use Naviance? With 3/year to Yale there should be enough data to give you a pretty good idea where you stack up.
