Okay this is bizarre and I don’t really have that much going for me. I had to work 40 hours a week to support my family. But there is another unusual thing I did. I started a compliments page for my school, while remaining anonymous. It was basically a forum where people could send in nice things about fellow classmates and suffice it to say, it was extremely successful. The local newspaper/website wrote an article about it. It was a frenzy. I did this as a sophomore lol; and I wrote a lot of the compliments. Should I include this in my application? I think it shows involvement. I don’t wang to embarrass myself. So I want the advice of the experts here.
I swear I am not joking “for the lulz”
That is really cool! I’m sure you should.l
That’s really cool! I’m not qualified to give advice since I haven’t done any college apps, yet. However, I think you could definitely include it, maybe in your essay? If you feel comfortable revealing you started the page to your guidance counselor, I think his or her opinion could be really useful in this situation.
Definitely. It’s commitment and shows your personality.
Yep. I don’t think it necessary shows a lot of skill or commitment or anything, but it is something special that will make you seem a bit more unique. A Cornell admission officer was answering questions on reddit the other day and he said that he always looks for applications that stand out a bit, like the kid who found an error on the SAT, or the kid who built an alarm clock that would feed him an oreo every morning when he woke up. None of these are extremely hard things but they make you stand out.
I’d put it on there. You could present it like you “improved the culture of the school” or something
I would add it. It is a unique extracurricular, and that is can add depth to your ECs. The fact that there was a newspaper article about it is impressive as well. Are you applying to colleges using the Common App? If so, then I would definitely include that some information about how your extracurricular drew the attention of the press. I would also write about how it had a positive impact on your school and community.
Thank you all for your advice! I will definitely add it. I truly needed some guidance. I have another weird extra curricular under my belt as well. Junior year was a really rough year because I had to work a lot of hours. I still have to work 40 hour weeks and another weird EC was born out of this. I recently made a “study” Instagram page and it has already gained quite a following. If it reaches a few thousand followers, should I include it in my application? I use it as a means of staying committed to my studies because people out there are being inspired by it. I post pictures of my notes and tips/advice. My GPA doesn’t show my enthusiasm for academics, but if I raise my SAT to break the 2000 mark and keep on going with this page, would it be compelling enough to present that I am in fact motivated and have the potential to graduate from schools?
I think it would count! That’s such a nice idea
I don’t think an Instagram page would count as an EC, though.
Awesome! You definitely should! Something my school does is that they have people write compliments then write them on the windows during "compliment walks’ during fall, winter, and spring! With window markers, of course, I would ask the school admins!
