So starting freshman year, I have taken the highest level for all my literature classes. In 9th and 10th grade I took honors literature and junior year I took AP Lang. However, I didn’t do that great in AP Lang. I ended with an 85. As of right now, I am signed up for AP lit, but I want to drop out of the class. Does this look bad on college apps? Because I’ve taken all honors/aps until now, but now I’m going the easier route.
Of course its going to look bad from an academic rigor perspective, however it’s up to you to evaluate whether or not you can succeed in that class and if getting a B or lower in AP lit is going to look worse.
AP Lit isn’t as boring or tedious as lang. For a lot of students like me, it’s much better. The senior year schedule is looked upon pretty importantly by colleges, so I’d encourage sticking to Lit. Even then, Dual Enrollment English is fine too (if your school offers). Just don’t drop to honors, a B in an AP class isn’t the end of the world.
To a large extent it depends upon what you want to major in and where you want to apply. I think that US high school students tend to stress out a lot about taking many AP courses. IMHO it is better to take AP courses in the subjects that you like and are good at. We don’t all have to go to Harvard. For “normal” very good universities you don’t have to take huge numbers of AP classes.
Personally I would expect AP Lit to be way more reading than I could ever have handled, but it depends upon what you want to do.
