Does this sound like Brown?

Hey. I had a post up that got lost but I had some great responses that were really helping me narrow down my choices & think about the schools I could fall in love with & apply to. So I’m re-writing!

I’m a sophomore at a university in the northeast majoring in English Lit (minors in History & Classical Civilization). While I don’t hate it I definitely feel it’s not the school for me, somewhat in terms of academics but definitely in terms of atmosphere & student body.

I’m not a big partyer/drinker & this school is! I’d love a school where the students’ interests vary, they attend on-campus events in high numbers, and also like going to the movies/day trip/hanging out with friends. I would also love to meet more people like me: non-apathetic, interested in learning & friendly.

I’d love to be heavily involved in 2-3 EC’s (esp. student events). I feel that this school not only has few EC’s to choose from but they’re not varied or well-attended. I’m not bothered about sports.

While academics come first for me, I don’t want to go crazy & spend 10 hrs a night on homework! I do want small classes (generally), great class discussions & personal attention from professors, although this doesn’t mean I’d like a school with only 1000 students. I’d also like to take classes outside my major such as Marketing, Design (Graphic, web etc.), Philosophy etc. However I know a lot of schools I’m interested in don’t offer Marketing; I’d sacrifice that for the ‘perfect’ school & just take summer classes.

The schools I’m researching right now are: Dartmouth (great transfer program but too much partying?), Haverford (great academics but too small?), Middlebury (great English dept. but too outdoorsy?), BROWN (can design own curriculum, first choice at the moment), Trinity College (don’t know enough about it but has been recommended to me), Williams (good academics, friendly students, don’t know much else), Amherst (good academics, but not sure it’s a fit for me), Boston University (has Marketing classes, good location for travel & internships, not sure about student-body), Wesleyan (sounds a bit like Brown). Yes, it sounds like I’m Goldilocks.

My stats, if it’ll help:
HS-
Full IB program in England. 6, 5, 5, in highers
1200 old SAT- did very well on Verbal, terribly on Math cos I’m beyond bad at it
Lit and Writing SAT II- 700 & 640
Some EC’s but not a great deal but it was a non-American school in England

College-
3.81 GPA. Dean’s List all 3 semesters. 4.0 GPA in major
In honors program
In honors English
Heavily involved in 2 EC’s, in a couple more
Great teacher recs

If anyone could offer any insight on the schools, comments or suggestions I would appreciate it so much. Thanks!!

It certainly smells like Brown.

While I am only an applicant to the college, many of you're reasons for wanting to apply were some of the same ones I had

Thanks, that response was more helpful. Have you visited? Where else did you apply?

Well, I'm in Houston, so it's difficult for me to visit right now. But I have been there many a time through internet slide shows. It seems sexy.

Anyway, I'm applying to UChicago, Penn, Northwestern (waived the fee), NYU, Reed, UT-Austin, and then some.

But basically Brown, UChicago and Penn are my top, completely unrealistic, choices

Do you mean UPenn? I considered that but think the atmosphere at Brown would be better for me. I got into NYU last year but didn't get nearly enough aid so couldn't go. Good luck.

Ditto, friend.

Do any Brown students have anything good/bad/interesting to say about Brown?

I'm an applicant and an exact copy of you. I dont and will never drink and I'm not a big party guy. Brown has very active frats/sororites and social life, and most people are partiers(Thats what I've collected from this forum and articles) but the rest is somehow as you described it.

I didn't know the frats were very active. But I hope an average weekend for at least half the pop would be movies, day trips, a fun activitity, house party etc- at least in my ideal school. Have you visited?

No, I havent. There was a very detailed description of the life at Brown a couple days ago. Anyway what school are you currently attending?

take a look!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=135448

I don't want to say what school I'm at, sorry. I liked the Get To Know us page at Brown and I'll be visiting soon I hope but I don't drive.

Actually, the frats are nowhere near the top of the social ladder. There are tons of other parties and things to do on the weekends (concerts, free movies, comedy groups, etc) besides going to the frats.

Thanks Rabo! And do these other activities get a lot of attendance/interest? This school (the one I'm at now) offers events such as comedy, music, trips but most people would rather drink or do nothing. And thanks for the link IHS!

thanx for clarifying Rabo! Thats a relief I thought Im applying to a total frat school!

Yup, sounds like Brown would be great for you.

I don't know much about Marketing here, but if you're interested in design, you should think about trying to take a RISD class or two.

A lot of people at Brown party and the frats are active, but there are definitely lots of non-frat parties, small house parties, parties without alcohol, people who don't party, stuff to do besides parties, etc.

"going crazy and spending 10 hours a night on homework" isn't the norm for every person and every night here, but there will definitely be some nights (and weeks) where you're spending a great deal of time on work, maybe 10 or more hours a night, depending on what classes you're taking and how you plan your time.

like what percentage of students are in frats? and are you sure that a student can find ppl from the second group you mentioned?

I love your name, ILoveBrown! The social mix sounds great from the way you describe it. IHS: I'm sure the % of stats is on their website- the number never seemed big to me. And a student can find any group at nearly every campus. Even at the school I'm at now has a mix, it's just not enough and there are other factors involved.

ILoveBrown: I'll be an English major so obviously I'll be reading for the rest of my college life! But that's the kind of work I enjoy. And I'm so glad Brown doesn't have requirements because the student body must be really interested in learning to take control of it (also, I haven't taken science in college yet!). Can you tell me a bit about your life at Brown (friends, classes, housing, surrounding area etc.)? Thanks!!

do you also love my name?
