because all i seem to see is trash for it!

no, not at all.

some posters feel that they are too good for UCSD, but thats their opinon.

Sure, it lacks social life, but you gotta make your own.

No, though I am transferring from it, I would still say that it is a nice school...You can have fun if you know the right type of people or if you love surfing or the beaches...itz biology and engineering programs are worth killing for....

to get into sd from HS is a great accomplishment. From CC- it's a little less of an accomplishment since they offer tag

The fact you have to mention specific programs at UCSD when someone is questioning its quality is proof that it is overrated. But that doesn't mean it's a bad school.

WHAT?? No, it's a great school. It's (something like) the 8th best public school in the nation and 35th out of all schools. How could that suck?

You can't judge a school based on what people on this board say.

who is this guy- g1a2b3e...he keeps on trying to dispute everything anyone says...u r pretty funny...

plus i said biology coz it is one of the top rated school in the world, not only USA...
I would not say that UCSD is overrated at all....Most of its programs are nationally known and some of it programs are world renowned..

UCSD's a great school if you put yourself into your work. There's nothing terribly wrong about the school, but there are few opportunities for humanities and social science students to go above and beyond what's expected of a typical undergrad.

In other words, if you're an econ major, your meaningful experience is going to be limited to within the boundaries of the department. Extracurricular internships? Forget about it. Research? Maybe. Want a law internship? Forget about it. Want to do polisci undergraduate research? You gotta push your professors hard for the opportunities.

Aside from that, the upper-division teaching for every department is generally spectacular. Pretty much every professor on campus has well-deserved degrees from Harvard, Berkeley, Yale, Princeton, U Chicago, and so forth.

Certain aspects of the campus social life are lacking - student activism is a niche activity, political clubs are usually pretty shallow. On the weekends, it seems like half of the student body goes home (to SD or LA). It becomes a ghost town, but oh well.

Also, the suburban quality of the area is sometimes overpowering. La Jolla is rich, snobby, clean, and (paradoxically) populated with a significant number of homeless people. You need a car to get anywhere interesting. Local community events like fairs and festivals are few and far in between.

It's a good school, but it's not for me. That's why I'm transferring out.

Transferring to where then? I would like the campus, and the beach seems WONDERFUL. (I surf.) But every derides the social life and the girls ;) and make such a nice sounding campus not seem to be like the top notch college experience.

darkarmour, what was your major?

i'm thinking about doing economics and internship prospects are VERY important to me.

Technics256, the surf here is great. The beach is 10-25 minutes walking distance, and there's a bona-frickin-fide surf shop ON CAMPUS that stocks boards, wet suits, skater stuff, and lots of other cool things.

hobofromdowntown, it's already tough to get internships with Merrill Lynch or JP Morgan from any good school, but it seems tougher at UCSD. Local internships here tend to be in the biomedical and science fields. There are always local politicians looking for interns, but there are only so many spots for a big number of seekers. Law internships are usually clerical, rare, and family-law or workers-comp related. If you want an econ-related internship, you've got to actively search out applications and submit them early.

I'm transferring to UCLA (or Berkeley, pending appeals results). I'm a polisci major.

You didn't understand my point. When we talk about schools like Berkeley and UCLA, while specific programs may eventually be brought up, we don't need to talk about programs in first pointing out that the schools are of worth. In fact, it's done quite rarely. Yet with UCSD, certain programs always have to be brought up, revealing that the school has a narrow focus, a good school in an area but not overall. Further, you cannot even compare UCSD to UCB and UCLA when it comes to being "nationally known." Most of the discussion on here comes down to comparing those schools, often with UCSD grouped with them, which I think is a mistake and reflective of UCSD being overrated.

Also, I've never seen UCSD on a worldwide ranking. Please provide a link to one.

Here is one link:
http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005_Top100.htm

I cant say much about the methodology adopted or the validity but this ranking system has been praised by Times, Newsweek etc.

This ranks UCSD as 13th in the world...

But I dont agree with the rankings since Dartmouth is ranked 103rd in the system which is not just possible...

Thanks, glad to see some sources used in the forum.

So do I get your stamp of approval, g1a2b3e??

So, UCSD does not suck....sorry Gabe

My friend decided to attend UCSD for econ instead of UCI for econ. Which is supposedly better? I would think UCI.
