Does UMass Amherst award any merit scholarship....??

When my S was applying to colleges a few years back, I recall that some schools ( e.g. Indiana Univ. ) pretty much guaranteed some merit $$$ if you had at least a certain SAT score ( and possibly GPA..not sure about the GPA part ). Just wondering if schools like UMass ( and even UConn if anyone knows ) have a similar type program as a way of inducing OOS kids to apply and enroll ? Thanks.

I do not believe that UMass awards any guaranteed money if you have a certain score. However, if you are applying to the engineering college and you are particularly strong, you may receive (as I did) the Honors Engineering Scholarship which is $5000 a year. There is a very lucrative National Merit Scholar award which covers full room and board as well.

They have very few endowed scholarships (around 10 or so), such as one by the old CEO of General Motors, which could cover up to full tuition. They also have a Dean’s Scholarship of $1000 dollars which may be applied on top of the tuition waiver and is awarded to a lot of people.

If you have more questions, look here: [UMass Amherst: Undergraduate Admissions - Scholarships for Entering Students](http://www.umass.edu/admissions/scholarships/). I don’t go here but I applied and I was considering attending this school but ultimately opted for WPI.

I don’t have any proof to back this up, but I think that UMass trends toward giving their scholarships to in-state students. Out of the honors college students I know, almost every one of them is from instate and receiving merit scholarships.
