I have heard it does, but at the same time, the catalog lacks an International Relations/International Affairs/Foreign Relations (you get the idea) major. Is it a specialization one has as a Poli-Sci/Government major? Or does UMD not have it at all?

^ No… the only UG degree that is any where close to resembling Int. Relations is Govt. + Politics, which is a LEP program. There is also a school of Public Policy, but I don’t think that relates to International Relations. If you live in MoCo, then take IR @ the community college for fun (that’s what I hope to do!).

In the scholars program there is an International Relations citation, or at least had one for class of 12. I know for 100% that it did exist back 2 yrs ago, because DS had it for his back up if he did not get Govt. Scholars have limited slots, so you may not get your first choice. I would look into BOS, to see. To get a Scholars Citation, you must intern, or write a very long paper (I think it is set at the min of 25 pages). The internships vary, but even if you went into the govt side you could intern for a Senator in the field of international, such as working in a subset within their office, i.e. Foreign Affairs. DS is govt, with military history as his core concentration, and a AFROTC scholarship, his internship for Sen Burr starts next week and he is assigned to the VA. So he will get experience not only in govt, but also in the military.

UMD is a recruiting ground for many govt agencies, starting at NASA and going to the CIA, FBI, and even the State Department. The beauty of CP lies with the fact that they are close to DC and many of their Deans have connections.

Thank you both very much! (:
I’ll have to look into it.

“IR” would exist only as a self-made concetration within the GVPT major. Currently UMD has a small comparitive politics team, but they are hiring three more faculty for the Spring.

I’d say IR is a growing strength in the GVPT major.

They DO have a peace and conflict studies minor, though, so depending on you IR interests that might appeal to you.

With the proximity to DC/connections that GVPT staff has, it’s worth a look even without a specific IR major, though.
