I hope they do.

If you applied regular decision, it will influence your decision. If you applied early action, it won’t influence your decision as they are released before S7 grades come out, but you are expected to continue the level of performance with which you were admitted, if you were admitted. At least that’s how I understand it.

what will the effect of a 4.0 student getting b’s first semester who applied RD have on admissions? What is the extent first semester senior grades have on decision?

Shnares, just to give you a perspective, my first semester senior year grades weren’t very good - 1 C+, 3 Bs, 3 As, and I got admitted after being deferred.

Alexandre may know a more general answer but from my experience S7 grades aren’t too much of a game changer, but they’re important. What that basically means is don’t pull 4 Cs, but if you went from an all As student to a 4 As 3 Bs student that won’t change the decision.

Good Luck!

kyle- wow that is surprising…are you instate? Was that last year? It may be different this year with the number of apps going up and things getting more competitive!

Question for any current student/former UM applicant or parent/alumni…my S applied EA in October, we are OOS. First semester grades won’t be out until early Feb., but first quarter grades are out and he did very well (note: h.s. is on block scheduling, 4 classes per quarter, AP or Honors usually 2 or 3 quarters long) …Q1 grades 1 A+ (reg business class), 2 A’s (AP and Hons) and one B+ (AP)…should he email Admissions just to share that info or ask if they want HS counselor to confirm? Will they take those grades into account AT ALL as they consider his EA decision? Thanks!

My S was in the same boat. He applied EA. His weighted GPA is a 4.9 but his unweighted is a 3.7. We are OOS. He has 5 AP classes this year and had straight A’s first quarter. We called the admissions office and were told that for EA his application was already complete and that they would probably not be considered but to send them anyway. He sent them (by way of an updated transcript) directly to the admissions office (as opposed to having his guidance counselor upload them to the Common Application as a supplemental report under school forms-which you can also do). It may not matter but it certainly can’t hurt.

Every school is different, with some requiring first quarter grades for ED and EA.

Good luck.

I’m out-of-state and this was last year. I was admitted to LSA.

GCLawmom, Thanks. Can I ask if you had the updated transcript mailed physically to admissions snail mail, or did the counselor send via email to admissions (did you send to your S’s admissions officer directly?). Since my S’s high school is block schedule, they only formally update GPA on semesters. Frustrating to hear they may not take into account a positive trend with a rigorous schedule senior year, as performance now (closer to start of college) should matter just as much (if not more) than their grades as freshman and sophs. As you said, can’t hurt to send, S will email admissions today and follow up accordingly.
Best of luck to your S, and congrats to him on a great first quarter! :)

GClawmom- I would be curious to know how you sent them as well. Our grades are available online but I would not know how to email them. I asked my guidance counselor to do it so it would be more official. I am not sure if they will be considered either … you never know…at least it shows you are interested! That has to help. “level of interest” is one of the criteria they consider! :)

My son’s school is based on semester grades and not quarter so they would only have been updated for his Regular Admission applications by way of the mid-year report. UM is his first choice school. He had the registrar at his school send his updated transcript (which contains first semester grades) to the admissions office. It has to be officially sent from the school. Interestingly, my S had a third recommendation from a Dean of another College (from a summer program) sent to UM and 2 other schools. He received the receipt post cards, that were sent, back from the 2 other schools but not UM. I’m convinced that they are inundated with information and probably did not receive his first quarter grades. However, he feels better knowing he tried and if he is deferred (God, I hope not!) they will see his mid-year report.

I hope this helps. Good luck to all.

I e-mailed my regional counselor and he said they do not consider any applicant’s first quarter/progress report grades during Early Action. He did say however that they take into account your course load, which they already have.

Thanks UM32194. My S emailed his counselor with the info anyway…can’t hurt! Good luck!
