I have a friend who will be attending UR in the fall. I know many schools do a pre-orientation event for freshmen and parents during the summer where they register for classes and the parents attend a couple of talks by various deans etc. Usually there are advisors present to help the freshmen make a schedule.

Does UR do anything like that or is all the class registration done online without the aid of advisors?

My d will be attending in the fall. There is no summer pre-orientation. But there is a full week of orientation prior to the start of classes. And Parent's Orientation is one day during that week as well.

D just got her course guide and other materials. There does seem to be a kind of "pre-registration" for classes on-line. However, nothing is final until orientation, after the students have met with their advisors.

It'll be interesting to see how they handle the actual "final" registration - whether there's going to be a "mad dash" to the computer to get into the classes they've finally chosen, or whether if you've pre-registered on line you're guaranteed your seat in that class.

(I will admit that I actually like the week-long orientation immediately prior to classes - which is what I had back in the dark ages. For those of us who have to travel, it's much easier to move her in, have orientation and leave in one trip. And I think the bonding may be stronger if you meet new kids and have a chance to make friends without leaving again for an extended period. Once you're there, you're there.)

There actually is a preorientation called UR Foot, though it tends to be real low key. I attended it last year, it was pretty cool. There are three different outdoor trips depending on your comfort/skill level. They only take 8-10 kids per trip so apply fast, since it gets filled up fast.
