I am planning on being on the premed track/ biology major at UT Dallas. I want to have many research and shadowing experience and I want to be able to get that from a nearby/ partner place. Is going to UT Dallas a good choice as a premed or should I consider other instate colleges? If so, can you please mention which ones? I also don’t want to go to a college where I it’s hard to score a 4.0. I love challenging myself but not to the point where it will hurt my GPA since my GPA really matters when I apply to medical school. Thanks.
Not really, there may be special opportunities with ut southwestern because of the ut system but schools like baylor and ut austin and ut san antonio have a med school affiliate.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the school. Just find one that works for you. UT Dallas is a really good school. So is UTSA and Texas State. The only magic bullet to medical is good grades, MCAT scores, and filling out a LOT of medical school applications.
UTD doesnt have a med school, but has a close affiliation with UT Southwestern. Some professors have academic appointments at bout UTD and UTSW. There are plenty of research options available on campus. It should be relatively easy to into research at UTSW by email professors there. There is a formal research program called the Greens Fellowship where utd students will take a semester off to work on research full time at utsw. utd even runs a shuttle between utd and utsw to make commuting there easier. plenty of utd students get into utsw and baylor for med school each year, and a couple get into top 20 schools out of state yearly.
@bigreddawgie , Thank you so much! That was very insightful.
UT Southwestern is a great medical school and has excellent research opportunity. They have an undergraduate summer research program for students from other colleges (as they do not have undergraduate themselves). I think it is called SURF. You even get pay for that. When I was there I have mentored more than a handful of SURF students over several years. Baylor College of Medicine (not Baylor at Waco) and other schools within the Texas Medical Center at Houston are also excellent in research but I am not sure if they have a similar research program for undergraduates. After all, UTSW is in Dallas and not too far away from UTD.
