I'm aiming for Berkeley and LA and I'm not the MOST qualified for those schools (but I like to think I have a chance). Will writing undecided help? (I'm going into business+computers and those are super selective).

For Berkeley specifically:

Undeclared in the College of Letters and Science (L&S): all frosh entering L&S enter as Undeclared. To enter the L&S Computer Science major, you must take the prerequisites and get a 3.0 GPA in them. Most other L&S majors just require a 2.0 GPA to declare, but a few popular ones require higher GPAs up to 3.2. To enter a major in the College of Engineering, you must apply into a competitive admission process.

Undeclared in the College of Engineering (CoE): probably more selective than applying as a declared CoE major. But Undeclared students can freely choose any CoE major later. Those with declared CoE majors must apply to change majors, though this is less difficult than changing from non-CoE into a CoE major.

To enter the business major, you must take the prerequisite courses as a student in any division or major (including Undeclared) and then apply into a competitive admission process.

In general, if different majors or Undeclared causes a difference in frosh admission selectivity, it has implications later for declaring or changing major. The easier way into the school may require a more difficult path to enter the major later.

Well because I think my chances aren’t the best should I just go for undecided? I think I can handle the higher GPA requirement
