does your freshman gpa really matter?

Hye, I am currently a sophomore in high school, and well I did pretty bad in my freshman year, but I am involved in a lot of sports. I got 3.9 gpa on my freshman year, and this year i got 4.4 so far. And i am wondering if my 3.9 gpa will hurt me to get accepted to caltech? or any good college? I am the president of the business academy, senate for asb, track varsity, football varsity, basketball, treasurer for world develpment, vice president pingpong club, and other clubs.. etc... taking all IB/Ap classes next year (which is my junior year), took all the appropriate classes last year and this year, was involved in a lot of committes, a lot of community service hours, and one thing that makes me special is that I am involved in a lot of church stuff because I am really religious. I am one of the bible study teachers for the kids, and one of the leaders for youth group. Go to church on wed, sat, and sunday. How am i doing so far? I need more info. I am going to take SAT soon, and gonna take SAT II math, and maybe korean or history. I love math but I am kind of weak on science! My dream is to build robot but the problem is i am not really good at science but i am really good at math! help me!

If you are "kind of weak on science", I don't know if Caltech is the right place for you.

The answer to your problems is this: use your math skills to help you with science. Beside that, you seem to be doing fine. Good luck!

one thing I see (and I can't say that it is officially bad) but you seem to be doing a ton of EC in places outside science if you really want to get into Caltech start focusing on science and math more.

I would modify that to that to say: do what interests you, and if it turns out you really love math and science and do those ECs, then you should apply to Caltech. Don't force your ECs to conform to whatever standard Caltech (or any other school) has.

Yea, and for ECs... Quality > > > > Quantity. Colleges won't like it if they think you are joining a ton of ECs to get in. Just do what interests you, find your passion.

It also helps if your passion is aimed towards your college plans, such as computer programming camp if you're headed to CS.

I truly enjoy seeing 3.9s treated as disasters on these boards. Either way, you haven't done anything that is unsalvageable, and even less so if the lower grades happen to be outside of the science/math subject areas.

Like BHCSI treekid? :P

<3 <3

I have a friend who got straight Cs her freshman year, then pulled through for straight As after that. She got into Caltech.

It's kind of a pet peeve of mine when people complain about their 3.9 GPAs. Damn perfectionists.
