Does your guidance counselor have to know everywhere you're applying to?

Because I don't really want to tell my guidance counselor that I'm applying to a school that's not our state school ( where everyone in my school goes to by the way). And I just don't want to be told I probably shouldn't apply there, etc. I already know I should have safeties and matches, but because no one at my school seems to ever apply to anywhere or go anywhere outside of our state I feel like that's where I'm going to be too, some state school. I'm not sure if people at my school go to our state school because they want to or because they can't get in anywhere outside of our state. Should I even bother looking outside of my state? Really, there are no good schools here at all. No privates or schools ranked in the top 30, 50, or even anywhere close to 100.

Does the fact that I go to a noncompetitive public school hurt my chances?

Yes, your GC needs to know because he/she needs to send your transcript and letter of recommendation to every school you want to apply to.

College admission will read your application in context of where you went to school. As long as you have taken the most rigorous courses and have high GPA then you should fine. What may hurt you is if your HS has never sent any student to a particular college, then adcom may not know your school well. What may help you is if your HS has never sent any student to a particular college, they may be interested in admitting some.
