Does your major affect potential admissions decisions?

I applied to schools for the Classics and Hellenic Studies (Modern Greek), both of which don't really get a lot of love. (You wouldn't believe how many people ask me what the Classics is :() Does taking up an unusual major affect admissions positively at all, or does it have no effect? I don't think it'll matter that much, but I'm curious to know what other people think anyway.

I don’t think you will be disadvantaged, but applying under certain majors means a more competitive admissions process. These are typically majors that fall into different schools though, like Engineering, Nursing, or Architecture. Classics is still part of Arts & Sciences, which is a fairly large department, depending on where you go to school.

It depends on the university and the schools within the university. For example, applying to University of Chicago for economics is much more competitive than applying there for… English.
