Does your major matter a lot for grad school?

Hi. I'm currently an undergrad sophomore majoring in psychology. I'm also very interested in government and may have a minor in government. I might go into grad school, looking for a master's in political science or maybe even economics (psychological economics). Would not having a degree in either those area discourage adcom from admitting me into a master's/graduate degree program?

Also, I'm thinking about med school. I've worked at a research lab over the summer, and a lot of people there had some job experience before they decided they wanted to go into med and are now doing postbac programs. Would you recommend having real job experience before applying to med school?

Thanks!

Yikes. If you’re thinking about med school then you MUST start thinking about it now as you need to load up on some serious electives to even have a chance at getting into med school. In particular, you need to take some chem/bio classes in order to have a decent shot.

Think long and hard about going to graduate school in those other fields. A graduate degree in either of them is not likely to pay off in the long run.
