Throughout high school I participated in a large number of small volunteer actives (none of them were over 10 hours) instead of one big service thing (like volunteering at a hospital every week). I still have like 150 hours.

An essay asks me to describe my favorite volunteering activity.

Do I write a pathetic essay about how I spent 5 hours doing something that one time??
Or do I describe all of my volunteering actives as one big effort?

I’m in a somewhat similar situation and I’m writing about one specific activity for my common app activity short answer and all of them in another essay.

I believe that I have extenuating circumstances though and I also have one big service commitment, so I think I’m fine. I’m not so sure how your pattern of service shows your commitment/looks too much like you’re doing it for colleges.

I would definitely write about all of them, especially if there’s not much substance to a single one.

You should be able to come up with a nice essay about the way you have chosen to participate in many small projects over the years. Think about your reasons for doing these individual projects, and about which ones were the most interesting to you. Was it hard to fit in all of those hours, and juggle these events? How did you find out about the different opportunities? Are there any that you wouldn’t want to participate in again, or that you wish you had a chance to repeat? If you were to commit to only one, what would that be? Or, are you just enjoying all of the variety?

What you write in your essay-- insight about how the activity changed your perspective, helped you decide on a major or career, made a difference in someone’s life – is far more important than how many hours you did in the activity.
