Doing research just for the sake of boosting your resume

I'm doing summer research for the first time this summer and I really regret it. My decision to do it was solely to boost my resume; I had absolutely no interest in the lab's research. My area of research is molecular biology. I hate spending hours designing PCR primers, picking and maintaining C elegans, and streaking plates, etc. The papers are also too hard to understand. I feel like I'm going to explode when I'm in lab reading papers or doing the things above. Does this mean research is not for me? Is there a way to like research? I want to like research, but research obviously doesn't like me.

i dont know if whining and moaning about this in a new thread every few days is going to help you any. Practically every person on this board whose opinion is worth anything has responded to one of your previous threads where you complain about the same exact thing. I don't know what you hope to accomplish by continuing to make new threads about the same topic but the way you're handling this reveals alot about your personality and the way you handle challenges.

What does it reveal about my personality and the way I handle challenges? (Just curious)

Well, you gave it a shot. You didn't like it. Move on. Either try to find another research position to give it another shot or do some activity you like more.

your last sentence should have been "I want to like research, but I obviously hate it."

there's more to medicine than just research, you know.

Its possible that you would be great doing research, but maybe the things you are researching dont interest you. Take some time to figure out what interest you. You dont have to do basic science, maybe you would like clinical, engineering, social science type research better. I found a great research group after find a lab that did things like was interested in. I spent 3 years in that lab.

Ahh, is research really that terrible? You didn't find it interesting even going through it (despite the fact that you had no prior interest in it?)

I'd really love to do research in college. The thought of learning new things through hands on experiences and probably discovering something is really enthralling XD

(sorry...>__>..nerdyness came out there)

Good luck with everything though!

ysk1 - so quit and do something more productive with your time. What do YOU like to do? Do you even know?

Ya-Alim - sure, lab can be learning through hands on experience. It can also be a lot of boring mindless procedures. I enjoy my research job, but I sure do a lot of pipetting and watching gels set.

I wouldn't necessarily give research up completely because you hate what you're doing NOW (and it's your first time doing this, right? It sounds like most of what you're doing is procedural and plainly mechanical, which will probably change as time goes on.). The are literally tons of different research projects into which you could delve. Don't limit yourself with concern because one project isn't doing it for you. Sit yourself down and really think about what you'd like to discover and what you'd like to spend your time doing.

And it doesn't have to be research either.
