The 1-2 days is for the volume of blood...it takes a few weeks to replenish the red blood cells lost in donation.

They had a blood drive a couple weeks ago, I forgot to go. I agree with David Cross, people who refuse to give their blood or be organ donors for transfer patients are stupid.

I'm only worried about the cleanliness of the needles, I remember reading stories in the 1980's about 1970's and 1980's red-cross mess-ups where they infected ~120 donors with HIV.

Anyone know if it's possible to donate at 15? Someone told me that the 17+ limit was just for schools...

You have to be 17, but you can donate at 16 if you have a parent's signature. It usually works out that way.

Dude, age limits suck.

Nah, just wait the extra year. Donating blood isn't a wonderful experience once you're actually there. I still pass out every time.

Um... you have to be 17 to donate... and if you do it at a school at 17, you must have a signed form, but if you do it at the blood bank, then you dont. thats the way florida does it.

I'm only 16, so I haven't really thought about this yet, but the one time I had to have blood taken it freaked me out. My dad and sister both pass out when they get needles stuck into them, and I'm almost as squeamish. I plan to donate my organs when I die, but as far as giving blood, I won't do it very often if at all.

Funny story...my mom went to donate blood and her blood pressure was a couple points too low. They said, "Come back on a day when you're more active."

She's like "I just walked several blocks and had a triple shot espresso... how much more active can I get???"

Obviously, it's different in California. :)

And it would be helpful if silentsailor mentioned where he was from, it totally slipped my mind that the rules are different elsewhere.

I'd like to give blood, but I have a serious phobia of needles and I don't think that I'd be able to give any without problems.

I'm sure that you can go over this phobia. When you'll give blood just don't
look at the needle, and you'll be fine. There is no reason to be affraid of needles, it isn't painfull at all :)

Actually I really can't. I get physically sick, anxiety attacks, hyperventilation, fainting, vomitting, etc. It's a really bad phobia. Seriously.

Oh, than it's alright, i suppose it's better if you don't try.

Yeah I know. I'm hoping to get over it, but its hard.

oh, dont let ppl lie to ya.. it kinda hurts.

Last time I donated blood I was out of it for atleast 3 weeks.

I picked the worst times to do it. No sleep night before, and during some althetic season. I worked out the next day after only to find my whole arm bruised.

It hurts? Maybe while the doctor is putting the needle into your arm, but that is just for 1 second! I gave blood 2 weeks ago, and I can assure you it doesn't hurt at all. And after that I felt so good. It's such a nice feeling
to know that your blood might save somebody's life. I can't wait to give
blood again!

moral responsibility?!?! what the......

well, i donated anyway, cuz i feel like i did too many bad things in my life, and its time to give something back to the world for some redemption

It hurts if you have low blood pressure. Either you pass out or your head starts to hurt. :(

But I think you that you aren't alowed to give blood if your blood pressure
is low.
