Done! BU it is! :) Thanks all!

Dear BU community,

The college search, application, and choosing is DONE! DJ has chosen BU and I couldn’t be happier that he has found what he believes is not just a good fit but a fantastic fit.

For those interested in this type of stuff, DJ had SATs of CR720, M670, W760, and SAT2s in US History and Literature in the 720 range (I can’t remember exactly). His GPA is 4.3-ish. He got a 5 in AP US History. Extracurriculars (including leadership) in music, Model UN, Student Government, that sort of thing.

He also applied to and was accepted to his safety American University (with a hefty merit scholarship), his match schools of The College of New Jersey (Honors program and merit scholarship), Skidmore College (Honors program, no $), and his reach school, Vassar College (no $).

But it was Boston University that gave him a really nice “University Scholars” merit scholarship of 1/2 tuition, a “Legacy Scholarship” of $1000 a year, and an invitation to the Honors Program. But it wasn’t the generous merit money that made the decision.

As a lover of all things history and philosophy, DJ was curious about the Core Curriculum, and this was why, among all the small liberal arts schools on his application list, he included the huge research school of Boston University. To make an educated choice he had to cut through all the hype and other people’s recommendations and experience the Core Curriculum for himself.

We just returned from a wonderful 4 days in Boston where DJ sat in on three Core class seminars as well as the accepted student day activities and the class visits were what made the choice so clear to him. He was smitten with the Core Curriculum and especially the honors section class. He loved the professors, he loved the class material and the small classes, and he enjoyed meeting and chatting with the enthusiastic Core kids who, like him, have a holistic view of learning.

We cancelled our accepted student day at Vassar. Vassar may have the fancier, more impressive name but Boston University has the fit.

On the last day of our visit, we went to the bookstore and DJ purchased a car sticker, a BU hoodie and a BU tee shirt. :)

Thanks to Kinshasa, xoenjoli88 and Lergnom in particular for their insights about BU. Big thanks to the CC community as a whole, which has provided so much information, feedback and honest advice about the entire mysterious college application process for first JJ (now a junior at Tufts) and now DJ. (The Boston area is simply meant to be for my family!)

Best of luck to all!
JJ and DJ’s exhausted but happy mom :)

Congratulations! Doesn't it feel great?

Dear jjsmom,
I too have a child at Tufts (sophomore) and daughter who just accepted BU's offer to join the class of 2011 (SHA).
It does feel wonderful to finally have made it to this point!

However, no rest for the weary here...my third and last child, a high school junior, will be taking the SAT in May. Let's see...maybe she'd like BC.

Congratulations. I'm sure your son will enjoy himself.
