Donnie Darko

i know this movie deals with time travel, but one thing i noticed is that it brings out the absurdity of the world we live in. it's ridiculous what some people concern themselves with and worry about most... a dance competition, college, a football game... it's like life is one big conformity and everybody is following the same path.

i think donnie is happy to escape that conformity and feels like he led a purposeful life by knowing he is sacrificing himself for someone who really cares about him hence why he is laughing and smiling in his room. he dies alone, but he dies content, happy, and accepting of his death. many people dismiss death and ignore it as if it won't happen to them and then when they are dieing they realize they are alone and have not understood themselves, the world, or their purpose in life.

sorry i'm just writing what comes to mind.

what was the purpose of God in the movie though? i remember donnie mentioning something about God's path when talking with his physics teachers. and all this stuff with free will and predetermined choices.... great movie.

i agree, great movie. i haven't seen it in a long time though, so i can't help you out with your question about God. i can't remember that particular scene.

love this movie. good post too :) but i haven't seen it in a while either, so i'll hafta let someone else come up with a response to that one.

have you ever been on the website? that used to keep me preoccupied for many, many hours

I watched it today for the 15th or so time.

It's such a beautiful movie.

And I really like your post on this.

Beautiful movie. Cult classic doesn't even sum up the amazing clarity with which this movie touched a lot of people.
Sorry to sound all serious, but I love that movie.

I <3 Donnie Darko! :D DD and Rocket Science are my favorite movies. (I'm into mainstream "cult" movies, haha.)

Has anyone heard about the slated Donnie Darko sequel? I can't believe the producers would even consider that! The ending is so mind-bendingly perfect.

geez this movie is something i've been trying to find for a while. something that delves deeper into the topic of why we are here and what we are here for. so many people are scared or never think to question the purpose of life or themselves. they walk around brainwashed and concerned with trivial things. i'm victim to this too. i meant to make this post, but i found myself involuntarily checking my e-mail and facebook. it's like automatic the things we do and think. and many are unable or unwilling to think past these things. however, i'm trying to think past them but it's hard. it's like there is this barrier blocking my mind that i can't get past. i feel like that's what God, or this higher Being is. something the mind has never seen or has an idea of; therefore we cannot understand it and as a result create ideas and images that put our minds at rest and peace with the topic of our existence. i was watching this movie that relates to this... the idea was that when Christopher Columbus arrived with his ships to Haiti or wherever the natives could not see his ships at sea because their minds could not comprehend or understand what ships were, which is why many of the natives thought these people were gods when they saw them there one day. it's crazy. i feel like i'm so close to understanding and connecting with God or something, yet i feel so far away and confused.

that was kind of off topic but whatever.

this movie also reminds me of the book The Stranger. where the protagonist Meursault kills a man for no reason is condemned to death, accepts his death, denies God, and basically proclaims the meaningless of life and that he is certain of himself, but that others are living like dead men.

the movie also reminds me of either buddhism or hinduism with the whole concepts of universes, predetermined actions, life's path, sorrow, finding oneself, and attaining nirvana. i feel like donnie attains nirvana... he is able to escape his universe.

... now i have to do my AP chemistry homework. grand.

that movie is deep
