Although six other colleges received our common app, CMU says they only received Part 1 of ours. Though we called a few times wondering when our letter would arrive, we kept being told to wait till April 15th and everything would be fine. They even cashed our check in January and was told that if anything was missing, we would be contacted.

When we still didn’t receive anything by April 15th, I called and found out they had no record of anything but Part 1 of the common app. Though they claim his audition would not get him into the school, entirely possible I know, it’s hard to have trust after what happened and after all six other schools accepted him.

I’m told our refund for the application fee is in the mail.

Lesson, call to check up if your application is complete in mid winter. Also, CMU has a website to check if each item has been received. This is important for all applicants to ALL colleges.

That said, and I really think it is unquestionable that CMU is a terrific well regarded program, no question....I must admit....that I have heard COUNTLESS stories almost weekly over a few years now, including our own personal experiences, of applicants to the BFA program and to the summer pre college program that demonstrate some disorganization in the office and a lot of lost applications and so on. I just learned of an example of such yesterday. I really hope that CMU can get this part of their act together because this is NOT an isolated incident. I feel like I have heard something of this nature (with variety) more often than smooth sailing for applicants to CMU's pre college and BFA programs.

However, I still think CMU is great.

Again, for those reading, always check on the status of if your application is complete and if your audition appointment is on record about a month after sending it all in. This has to fall on the applicant. Do this for every school. Pay particular attention to do this at CMU.
