Don't Blame U.S. News!

ilovebagels: Penn C&B 1970-71 Edition

There's quite a bit, some samples---

"Like at least one Ivy League institution, Columbia, Pennsylvania is engaged in a massive urban removal and renewal program that will cost nearly $100 million."

"Drinking prohibited except for students over 21 in their own rooms. University views identification as contributor to street riot or disturbance as serious breach of conduct. Dormitory regulations mild; women may be entertained in men's undergraduate dormitories at designated hours. Dress appears to be casual; shoes must be worn in public areas; skirts must be worn to lunch and dinner in University Dining Halls."

"Admission is among the most selective in the country for College of Arts and Sciences (men) and College of Liberal Arts for Women; highly selective for Wharton school of Finance and Commerce, the 4 engineering schools, schools of Nursing and Allied Medical Professions."

"For all schools 41% of applicants accepted; 56% of these actually enroll. 65% of freshmen from public schools, 25% from private, 10% from parochial schools. About 85% of freshmen graduate in top fifth of high school class, 99% in top two -fifths. Average freshman SAT for liberal arts colleges 620 verbal, 660 mathmatical; Average freshman verbal scores range from 600-649 for Wharton School, schools of engineering, schools of Nursing, Allied Medical Professions; average freshmen mathmatical scores range 650-699 for Wharton School, schools of engineering, 600-649 for schools of Nursing and Allied Medical Professions."

(Of course remember these SATs are before recentering...give or take, add about 70 to the verbal to get a comparable score today...and love the "street riot or disturbance" reference, quite historic)

Honestly, everyone insults U.S. News for not being accurate or being superficial, but if it wasn't there, people would want something like it.

Everyone always asks for rankings, then complains when they realize the shortcomings.

Agreed. Btw, I also like how USNWR gives peer ratings, everyone should check those out. for example, Berkeley is placed much higher that way.

Anyone have anything on Occidental College? Or Louisiana State University?
