New Guide to Colleges out

"The Students Guide to Colleges" Features detailed first person opinions by two students at each school with some overview and other details. Only read a few but they seemed pretty accurate albeit with slightly different perspectives. Only 100 of the most popular schools.

Yeah, I work at the library and read it before we put it out on shelves, pretty much a reprint of the last few years, but interesting none the less.

I think you are looking at the Insider's Guide which is different. This is a new one just published.

^ Ah, you are correct, nice find!

Ooh, that looks good. I just added it to my Wish List. Thanks!

One of the authors of this new college guide, Jordan Goldman, is the kid who was profiled in the book The Gatekeepers. He has just graduated from Wesleyan University.

This book is close to a must buy, IMO. I tell students that they should have this book, the Fiske's Guide to the Colleges, the Fiske's Deadline and Planning guide to the last two years, Bruce Hammonds, "Deals and Discounts at the top colleges", Marty Nemko's, "Your Going to love this college guide", and "The Gatekeepers". I believe that these six books are as good as it gets.

I know there are many other excellent books including: Loren Pope's books, The Princeton Review, Insiders Guide to the Colleges, A is for Admissions, The college admissions mystique, Admissions confidential, Barrons books, Howard Greene's books, etc,. but I like the six pack I recommended and if I had to cut that number to three, this book would make that cut.

I bought 15 copies for juniors at the school I work at. I got them on Albris.com for $7 (including shipping) per book. These were new books so it was literally one third of the retail price.

I've read the Gatekeepers three times and I was wondering why the name, Jordan Goldman sounded familiar. I also thought it was weird that he thanked Ralph Figureoa (admissions rep followed in the Gatekeepers). It's interesting how Goldman went from being featured in the Gatekeepers to launching a career as a writer, consultant, and now "perceived expert" on the top colleges.

I think that this book did an excellent job of capturing the essence of most of the schools. Hearing such candor from students from various perspectives was very insightful.

My only beef with the book is that I thought there are a few schools that should be in any book that purports to include, "the top 100 colleges."
Occidential college immediately comes to mind. I would also add Agnes Scott, University of Richmond, Wheaton College in Illinois and Villanova. I also don't know how you can include Gettysburg college, but omit Franklin and Marshall or Dickinson college. I realize that it's much easier to add names than it is to cut schools and I really respect the research that the authors put into their attempt to get the top 100 correct, but hopefully in future editions they will revise their list.

A must have book that I can't recommend highly enough.

i didn't really like the book to tell the truth, but it's not as bad as the princeton review 365.

For guides, I found College P.rowler by far the most useful, then the yale daily news and fiske the next best.

I really thought this book was pretty unreliable... I flipped through to some schools I know personally and their descriptions just seemed wrong. They focused on little things the interviewed students said and made incorrect inferences and conclusions... I promptly put it back up and vowed to not read it again.

Of course... any new perspective is useful and im sure, as with any guide, some of the colleges have more useful and insightful information than others... just take this one with a grain of salt.

I didnt read any college books whatsoever...weird.

no, you're just not as anally obsessive over college as the rest of us here on cc. I think I must've read every published college guide out there.

Check out The U, I found their site and their DVDs really helpful. More focused on what the kids are interested in knowing about the school than what the school wants you to know about them.
