I filed for Financial Aid on the 22nd with only one school(Saint Lous University), but then I resubmitted it on the 27th with another one(Texas Lone Star College, their deadline for Financial aid was July 1st). It's been processed successfully and my EFC is 0. My Brother and Sister have also applied to the same community college but earlier than I did(My sister also applied to two schools, but both were still within the area). They got theirs approved within 1-2 weeks. An email to their Lone Star Inbox informed them.

Mines is still completely empty.

The thing is I never sent an admission to SLU. I just filed for Financial on a whim until I was advised to start going to school this year, hence the resubmitting for Lone Star College. Could it be taking this long because of SLU? Are they not touching my file because I haven't applied there? If so, should I resubmit it without SLU or would that just restart everything and delay the process for LSC?

I'm really confused about how all this works, and I'm afraid that I won't be able to register for classes if it doesn't come in time.

The first year of a process is always confusing. As documents come in, either electronically or on paper, it’s wise to keep a file so everything is all together.

Normally one applies to colleges in the fall of the high school senior year. FAFSA is done between January and May (usually it is best to be as early as possible). College acceptance is typically in early April and will come with a letter that explains financial aid (if the FAFSA has been completed).

So things do over lap a bit. Things can also get out of sequence if one is already out of high school.

If you haven’t actually applied to a college and received an acceptance, then the Financial aid office will, of course, NOT move forward on your file. It happens all the time. Sometimes a person will be thinking about going to a certain college and then things change and they never call to say “I’m not coming” – so the college has partial paperwork and that’s that.

So you need to hustle. You need to fill out the application to the place you wish to attend. You need to pay any application fees, submit grade transcripts, SAT scores and anything else on their list. Once all that is COMPLETE, then you should hear from financial aid.

Every college is different, so you may (or may not) have enough time to register for fall classes. I can guarantee that people who are neat and complete and on time always have the best chance of getting to register when and for the courses they want.

Get going. Keep notes to yourself on what you need to do and who you talk to/email. Good luck!

So are you saying I need to resubmit my file without SLU since I won’t be attending? I know the delay isn’t because of other things since my siblings got theirs approved for LSC before submitting transcripts/taking the placement test/student orientation etc. They got their approvals while having holds on their Lone Star Student Account.

No, the financial aid application for one school does not generally affect the other. If you have applied for admission to a school and have applied for aid and have not heard back in what you think is a reasonable time frame, pick up the phone and call them. The admissions office and financial aid office are usually separate and will each have their own file.
