When you are starting out, either on your path to Industrial Engineering or even Engineering in general, you are eager to learn about what exactly Industrial Engineering is, what they do on a daily basis, salary ranges, job descriptions, etc. Sadly, there is not much enough information out there. Over time, I developed an approach (which I am going to share today) to see Industrial Engineering in a meaningful way. This has greatly worked for me over the years.
IEs, as people say ‘Imaginary Engineering’ has been really obscure to many of us for so many reasons-
Not much clear and simpler definition on your university’s website
We do find information, something like -“IEs analyze complex optimization problems and solve them for business solutions that allow to make better decisions.” The problem, for most of us is, we quite really do not understand what that statement means, and how will our life be as an Industrial Engineer. I find, more or less, all universities post similar information on their IE webpage. Practically, this looks informative, but in reality, one still doesn’t get a clear visualization picture about what exactly Industrial Engineering is.

Don’t you search for terms like “What is Industrial Engineering” or “What do IEs do” ?
You are then loaded with tons of information, but then again, we aren’t given concise answers. One can clearly relate to fields like Electrical or Computer Engineering, but it is quite a challenge for IE. In fact, even the definition by Wikipedia is a little baffling.
So, today, I’ll try to explain the definition of Industrial Engineering, but I’ll do it not by giving 1 or 2 complex definitions, but by giving descriptions of all the nuts and bolts of IE. That way, it will be much simpler for you to understand and which you can explain to even a 10-year old. We will also cover a couple of myths surrounding IE and the answers to that. The following are the critical (or I would say the most important) factors about Industrial Engineering which you need to understand. I recommend to focus on only these if you were to really know what Industrial Engineering is, because if you are able to properly visualize them, it will be relatively easier to visualize what IE is as a whole. Lets deep dive in-
